The word that Piper knows best of all is COOKIE. But she’ll only respond if I say COOK-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, with a very high banshee-like shriek at the end. The neighbors must hate me.
My friend Mari-Beth (the Westboro dog walkin’ mama) sent me her recipe for dog cookies today. Piper has had a few of these and really liked them. And I wanted to post it here so I don’t lose it.
I love the idea of baking up a batch of my own natural (and healthy!) dog treats. I’m going to try this easy recipe and see how they turn out for me. (As soon as I get a cute little cookie-cutter of course.)
Mari-Beth’s special homemade dog treats
2 ½ cups whole wheat flour
¼ cup wheat germ
½ cup instant dry milk
½ teaspoon garlic salt
1/3 cup margarine
1 egg, beaten
1 tablespoon molasses
½ cup warm water
Preheat oven to 375°. Combine flour, wheat germ, dry milk and garlic salt. Cut in margarine until mixture resembles cornmeal. In separate bowl stir together egg, molasses and water. Add to dry ingredients and mix together to form a ball. Feel free to use your hands for this. Roll dough out on a floured surface to a thickness of ¼-inch. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters and place on a greased baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool.
