Our Christmas holiday now seems like it happened very long ago. Sigh. I am wrapping it up with this final post. All in all, it was a pretty great little getaway. I’m glad we did it. Not only was it a really nice opportunity to do something new and reconnect as a family, but it was […]

Thinking out loud about snow

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Easy ways to make kids happy

We woke up to a winter wonderland this morning. It snowed overnight; enough to cover everything in a blanket of white. Although I don’t love the cold, snow makes me happy. This, despite the fact it means extra work in terms of clearing snow off the car, shoveling the driveway, mopping wet floors in the […]

With a little bit of help, kids can make their own felt poppy brooches. November is the time of year to wear a poppy. Why not try making your own this year?* Not only is this an easy craft to do with the kids, but it’s a great opportunity to talk about the importance of […]

We were at Farm Boy yesterday when I spotted a package of rambutan for $1.49. I decided to buy it and make everyone try some. (One of the perks of parenthood, IMO.) Rambutan, in case you’re not familiar with it, is a fruit from Southeast Asia. It’s chewy and very mild tasting and sweet. The […]

If you follow me on Twitter you may have noticed a dinner event at Saunders Farm from which I shared a bunch of photos. Saunders Farm has been a Fishbowl patron* since 2010. We’ve been there many times, both in the summer and fall. Last year our youngest daughter and a few friends experienced the night-time […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (18) and Sarah (16). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

If you'd like to contact me, please use this form. If you're so inclined, you can read more about me here. Thank you for visiting!
