a peek inside the fishbowl

With a little bit of help, kids can make their own felt poppy brooches. November is the time of year to wear a poppy. Why not try making your own this year?* Not only is this an easy craft to do with the kids, but it’s a great opportunity to talk about the importance of […]

We were at Farm Boy yesterday when I spotted a package of rambutan for $1.49. I decided to buy it and make everyone try some. (One of the perks of parenthood, IMO.) Rambutan, in case you’re not familiar with it, is a fruit from Southeast Asia. It’s chewy and very mild tasting and sweet. The […]

If you follow me on Twitter you may have noticed a dinner event at Saunders Farm from which I shared a bunch of photos. Saunders Farm has been a Fishbowl patron* since 2010. We’ve been there many times, both in the summer and fall. Last year our youngest daughter and a few friends experienced the night-time […]

You know, in case you’re looking for something to do other than organize closets, do laundry, and shop for school supplies this weekend. :| I urge you to STEP AWAY from the washing machine (wasn’t this the year you were going to get the kids to start doing their own laundry?) and go do something […]

I don’t think we’ve expressly stated this, but we’ve somehow made it a mission to visit a new campground at an Ontario Provincial Parks site every summer. These are the ones we’ve been to so far: Algonquin Park (Achray) Presqu’ile Provincial Park Grundy Lake Silent Lake (in a yurt! In March!) Lake St. Peter Bon […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (18) and Sarah (16). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
