Feeling trim, date night, and a new gig

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa

Well, friends, we are just past the halfway point with the Whole 30 thing and I have good news and bad news. Bad news: I cheated. You are technically not supposed to weigh or measure yourself at any point during the thirty days, but I did. I blame Mark! He weighed himself and announced a […]

Whole 30: Day 12 update

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

I should begin by saying that I haven’t fallen off the wagon or cheated. I’m still here; still going. (!) We’re almost at the halfway mark! A lot has been written about sugar lately, and how it affects our brains and waistlines. I know for a fact that when I eat sugar I crave more […]

Whole 30: Day 9 update

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

So that weird woozy/tired feeling I had is gone. I have been feeling pretty good these past couple of days! I found myself running up the stairs and punching the air on my way to the shower this morning a la Rocky. WHO IS THIS PERSON? I don’t think it’s too early to say that one of […]

Whole 30: Day 5-6 update

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

Here’s an image: me, trying to write while the youngest daughter makes herself a giant bowl of buttered popcorn and then sits down next to me. Sigh. Strangely, corn in any form is not allowed on Whole 30. I thought popcorn was a healthy grain! I’m bummed about not being able to eat it for […]

So far, so good. The only bump in the road was my mother-in-law’s baking. Let the record show that I did not sample any of this freshly-baked temptation: Going into this I thought one of the hardest things about doing a Whole 30 would be giving up my breakfast routine. I love my breakfast routine […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human daughters: Emma (20) and Sarah (18). During the day I work as a writer at The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
