More about Spins & Needles

Posted by andrea in: File under crafty

KD and KM and I, along with about 25 (?) other people came out for Spins & Needles last night. Let me tell you, it ROCKED. I brought Baron von Beakenheimer and made him some brothers. In case youre wondering, B.v B is an egg cosy, one of those things that are useful yet terribly impractical and fun. Hes made out of an old yellow towel I picked up at ValVillage. Contact me if you want specific instructions on how to make your own. :)

Most of the people who showed up were knitters. Others dyed eggs and did papier machée. One young guy spent most of the night sewing a huge patch on his T-shirt. He was one of few men in attendance, but I think he was smart. What a great way to meet a girl over crafts! Its the one area where a pick up line doesn’t sound as cheesy and contrived as if it was spoken in, say, a nightclub:

Can you help me with this, he asks with pleading puppy dog eyes as he fumbles with a tangle of thread that hes trying to pull through the fabic.

Can I borrow your sewing scissors?

Hey, cool pin cushion! Did you make that?!?!

The three of us hung out, sewing/knitting, chatting, drinking beer and listening to awesome music. I sat there, thinking, that this was the COOLEST thing ever. I felt like I was part of some kind of revolution. Me, a revolutionary crafter who cant even do a blanket stitch (as I found out this morning) ! Its like its suddenly all come out of the closet.

It was a really neat way to see in the long weekend, and the weather finally looks promising. Happy Easter everyone!

That sounds like a BLAST! How cool to be crafting socially, and how cool to feel part of a community. Those moments are what I miss about Ottawa – Toronto feels really big and impersonal sometimes, and although there are probably crafty communities here it’s overwhelming to find them. There are groups for everything!

Anyway, good for you for making your BvBs while drinking beer! I’m sure they caused quite the flap. Har har.
