When food turns against you

Posted by andrea in: Misc. life

Because I want to fit into last summer’s shorts, today is day two of the Diet that I’m Not Really Calling a Diet. In case you’re wondering what kind of diet it is, it’s South Beach Meats Sensible Eating.

I started after Sunday night’s roast pork dinner. Diet wise, roast pork isn’t that bad. There’s a bigger problem with the huge potato I had (with bacon, butter AND sour cream) as well as the 1.5 rolls I smeared with 2.3 pats of butter. This all after a day spent inhaling eating cheezies (CHEEZIES for chrissake) and chips.

I’m not even going to mention dessert, although I will say that it included caramel sauce.

Mary loaned me her South Beach guide and recipe book. But unless we get a larger fridge and I decide to dedicate several hours each day to my own meal preparation it’s not really going to happen.

The drive to lose five pounds has forced me to make some choices. For the time being I’m eliminating snacks, sugar and the usual suspects (baguettes/butter/pasta). I’ve also let coffee sneak back into my life. And as much as I love it I think the South Beach people are right: it creates an unnatural high and later, a bigtime low that I fill with cookies.

I will not, however, give up cheese. Or my breakfast: plain yogurt mixed with flax seed, fruit and granola.

The thing I don’t like about the original SB diet is that there really isn’t a lot of fibre in the first phase – unless you are a bean lover, which I’m not. If I followed it more closely I would fear that my colon would feel like a 2 x 4. Roughage is good.

Let’s hear it for fruit and veggies!

I’m also doing my power walks again. Although halfway through yesterday’s walk I suddenly felt my tummy ache. This destroyed my pace. Must have been all that hummus I had for lunch.
