Did you hear about the lady who went swimming at Andrew Hayden Park 2 days ago and got parasities? All over her body, her skin broke out in huge welts… totally disgusting… here is the story:

I’m too scared to take my son to any beaches here in Ottawa, although Petrie Island is nice and Mooney’s Bay, too, but to actually go in the water… I’m afraid of e.coli and he already has a history of UTI’s!

We went to Mooney’s Bay yesterday. It was wonderful. There were quite a few people there, on the sand and in the water. There was also a fair bit of green algae/seaweed, and I did try to keep Lia from drinking anything!

I see people in the water at the beaches too but have never had the guts to go in…
I live really close to Petrie Island though, I should probably give it a try some time. Maybe.

That woman has swimmers itch. It’s common and not an indication of the water quality. Just towel yourself off as soon as you get out of the water.

You know all this water quality talk of today pales in comparison to the days of polio warnings at Mooney’s Bay….and warnings about lamprey eels ! Oy.

…swimmer’s itch ! Bring it on !

Miss V: I don’t think swimmer’s itch can be prevented by towelling off.

Wiki info here.

polio? Never heard of that. I heard that a lady got a parasitic infection from swimming in the Ottawa last week.

Not preventable completely, but you can reduce your chances of getting it.
