a peek inside the fishbowl

It took awhile to get to this point

Posted by andrea tomkins in: File under crafty

Awhile ago I mentioned a project that involved some sawing. Well, it’s done! Finally.

These are what I made (click to enlarge):

 art squared

… somewhat reminiscent of the “twin” series of artcards that I made while ago here, aren’t they? :)

I’m thinking of drilling a hole in the back and hanging them in a row vertically in my living room… which is reddish-hued.

These were fun to make. I have four more blank pieces of wood. And too many little 1″ squares to fill them with. Hmmm.

Those extra 1″ squares could be a fun project for a simple little tabletop–you could use a piece of table glass to cover the art so that it wouldn’t be damaged by coffee rings and the like.

I like the blocks. :)

I forgot to say that I really like the texture you have going on beneath the squares. How did you achieve it?

Very cool. It’s fun to make stuff for your own walls sometimes.

Thanks guys. Liss, the texture is achieved by mixing a bit of gel medium with the red paint. It makes it a solid gel, which I usually spread with a plastic knife. Underneath that is a few coats of paint: starting with brown, then dark purple, then the red with the gel, then a bit of gold.

[…] I forced myself to finish this project yesterday. It turned out well, but to tell you the truth my heart wasn’t in it like it used to be. The excitement has left me. I used to be immersed in some kind of art on a daily basis. There was always something (like a handmade postcard or artist trading card) on the drying rack.  […]
