Taming the Do

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

I had to look up the photo I took when I first got my bangs, to see how long it’s been.

This is the one I mean:

 bangs

It was November. November! Which means I’ve been struggling with my bangs for months now.

You see, this photo was taken the minute I got home from the salon. Part of me was thrilled, and the other part, the vanity insanity part, THAT part that secretly knew I WOULD NEVER REPRODUCE THE BANGS LIKE THIS EVER AGAIN.

That part was right. For awhile.

I tried everything. Different goops, sprays, flatiron, curly brush etc after tiresome etc. I ran out of options. I was not able to get them to be this straight (my hair is naturally wavy, and a widow’s peak does not help either).

And then, just as I was giving up, I tried a little known hair styling technique calle REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY. It works on unruly kids sometimes, why couldn’t it work on unruly hair?

I dried my bangs in the TOTAL opposite direction, sweeping them towards my right instead of over to the left. No product, no other special technique. And when I was all done I walked around the house, la di dah, pretending that AN OPPOSITE HAIR PART didn’t feel weird and wasn’t totally bothering me.

Me and Lex at the CheapEats Ottawa book launchAfter the bangs got settled in and all comfy I did a big AHA and swept them to the other side, so they’d sweep toward the left as they should be. They didn’t see it coming. And it worked!  For the past couple of weeks my bangs haven’t been nearly as wild and unruly and misbehavinglike. Pictured to the right here is a shot of Lex and I at the CheapEats Ottawa book launch. (I’m on the left!) Not bad huh?

I may have finally found a way to tame them.

This is what my 3-year old son would call a “switcheroo.”

It normally manifests itself (in my house) as him looking at me and saying, “I love you – ” quickly turn his head to his mum, “Mummy!”

Ouch. Good thing it works on hair.

I have been seriously thinking of going back to bangs. This is a very good trick to know. It brought back memories of the “Battle of the Bangs,” that I use to have in the mornings. I think your bangs look great!
