mapping

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life|travel talk

Mark is still home with pneumonia. The antibiotics are finally kicking in. He’s feeling better, but is still tired and worn out.

Yesterday I went to the wonderful World of Maps store (ever been in there?) and bought a giant fold up paper map of the Maritimes. We started planning out our route and booking a few places.

It’s interesting how different we are in all of this. Mark is itching to BOOK STUFF ALREADY whereas I really need to pour over the materials and not feel totally overwhelmed.

We had several conversations exactly like this:

Mark: So are we booking that one in Cavendish? [Said with credit card in hand, finger poised on the Enter key]
Me: Um, maybe.
Mark: I thought we liked this place?
Me: Yeah…
Mark: So?
Me: What if it’s not The Best place? [Said quietly, looking wistfully at a page full of Travelocity recommendations, finger poised on the Next page link.]
Mark: [Grumbles. Then walks away.]

Am I crazy or what? I feel overwhelmed by all those dots on the map. And there are so many g.d dots on this one. What if we commit to something and then miss something totally awesome?

I also worry about spending too much time in the car, staring out the window for hours on end. This is not how I want to experience the Maritimes – which look so beautiful and quaint and hands-down friendly.

We have a couple places left to book: one in Quebec City, and I think we’re up in the air in Baddeck, but otherwise it’s starting to come together. For better or worse. :)

I spent my honeymoon in Baddeck. We got a room at a lodge and used it as our home base and did day trips all over the Cape. We loved it and enjoyed the Alexander Graham Bell museum very much. There is also a really cool water fall at then end of a nature trail (we found that in the tourist guide so it isn’t a secret). THere really is so much to do there you just can’t do it all. But you can trust that what you do do will be awesome.

Really? Chantal, I have to ask, where did you stay? Maybe it’s the same place…

Good for you going out east. I was born in Halifax and spent all of my summers on Cape Breton Island so if you have any questions just let me know. If you can afford to stay at the Leltic Lodge (even if you camp on the grounds) you cannot go wrong. My Dad worked there through University and we LOVE it.

I am so excited for you going for the first time. We are hoping to go this summer as well but have not begun to plan. Cory and the girls have never been and it will be great to show them how beautiful it is.

Hi Andrea,

First time poster here…

I took a similar trip last summer and can tell you how we broke up the trip to avoid being in the car every day… don`t have time to elaborate right now but will write a synopsis of our tour tonight….

We have the same kind of conversations in our home, except I’m the one saying, “This is a GREAT option! Why do we have to look at ALL the options?”

You’ll have a great time no matter what, soaking up the laidback pace of the Maritimes with the people you love. Enjoy!

I’m a let’s book it until we see something better and then I’ll cancel kind of person. I think that makes me a blend of you and Mark. You might be interested in the research at MIT about how people like to keep their options open – http://www-tech.mit.edu/V128/N7/behavior.html For what it’s worth, going to the East Coast will be fantastic, even in the second or third-best lodgings. I just love it out there.

We stayed at Hunter’s Mountain Chalets http://www.huntersmountainchalets.com/ it is inland. The rooms are simple, and nice. We got one with a full kitchen and we had all our breakfasts and one dinner there (we stayed there for 4 days before moving on to Halifax).

I googled the water fall and came up with “The Uisge Bahn Falls Park”. It is a really nice walk and the falls are beautiful.

Thanks again everyone! Everything is pretty much booked – minus an overnighter in QUebec City. (So if you have a recommendation I would love to hear it.)

Freakazojd – yes, this is our summer holiday. We’re so excited.

We go through that every summer when we plan road trips through the USA.

All I can say is research, research, research…and then just go with it. Why?

Because every SINGLE time, we’ve had one hotel be crappy, or took a wrong turn, or had something not quite turn out.

You know though, that’s part of the adventure of a road trip and we always say, “Oh well, at least we’ll have a good story.”

So just do the best you can and then relax and have fun! :)
