Minus one tooth and two dollars richer

You wouldn’t believe what kind of trauma this particular tooth has gone through.

Sarah has fallen on her teeth four or five times. In fact, I still can’t believe she didn’t lose any of them by force. Once she even got a shovel (or was it a broom?) in the mouth. Looking back, I wonder if these could be attributed to the fact that she needed glasses. Hmm. Regardless, I can’t even remember how many times I’ve held cold wet facecloths to her bleeding mouth.

As a result, this tooth has gone though many shades of white and grey. It’s been wiggly for the better part of year. Yesterday Sarah called me from school to tell me it was really bothering her. It ached, and it was so loose that she couldn’t even bite into a peach. I asked her if it was really wiggly. She said yes, and that her tooth was making a clicking sound. She held the phone up to her mouth so I could hear it. (I couldn’t.)

So last night, after watching the first half of Karate Kid (what a great movie!) Mark decided the tooth was finally ready to come out. (He’s the tooth yanker in the family, I’m not. The mere thought of it gives me the heebie jeebies.)

And here she is.

missing tooth

Here’s a question for you:

What on earth do you do with the teeth? It seems kinda creepy to keep them (I’ve heard of people making them into necklaces) but it also seems weird to throw them in the garbage. Thoughts? ;)

I am betting that the tooth fairy who visits your house is awesomely creative…

I have all of my daughters teeth in labeled plastic bags. I have no idea what I’m keeping them for or what I’m going to do with them. She will be 10 next month and figured out over the winter that there was no tooth fairy, she has not asked me what I did with the teeth. My son will be 6 next month and should loose his first tooth within the next month or so. I am very curious as to what creative ideas your readers have. I sort of just assumed you had some marjorly cool ritual do to with your kids teeth. I don’t know how you would keep the tooth fairy thing going if your kids still saw the tooth after the money showed up under the pillow. Maybe I am just not creative enough to see past that.

Ergh. That would bother me. Glad it’s out!

What’s Mark charge for tooth extraction? I don’t know if I can do that!

Awwwwww she looks so cute! Hey good question, as you know I’m not at that stage yet so I’ve never thought about what happens to the teeth after. I wonder what my parents did with ours, I must ask…obviously they are ‘gone’.

I have my baby teeth – my mom gave them back to me when I was 16, and I’ve got Lily’s first five in an envelope in my jewelery box. :P It seems mean to throw them out.

My parents didn’t do the tooth fairy thing, instead I saved all my teeth in a container. I was completely creeped out a few months ago to find them in my old jewelry box (still a bit bloody in a couple cases) and threw them out.

My mom took a wood carving class in her 70s and used two of my daughter’s teeth to put bucky teeth on a beaver. It grossed out my sis-in-law but I thought it was creative.

FWIW – I have kept all of Grace’s baby teeth, at least the one’s she didn’t swallow. For those who don’t know, Grace is my dog. ;)

Gotta vote garbage. I’m not a keeper of things as it is, but ex-body parts are out the door as far as I’m concerned!

Thinking about it kinda creeps me out. But, my Mom has all of our baby teeth, so it doesn’t seem that weird. I guess I will cross that bridge when I come to it.

My mom kept them in her jewelry box too. She didn’t separate them so it’s just a weird pile of my sister’s and my teeth. When our puppy lost her teeth I put them in a little sake glass that sits on our shelf. (We don’t use it so it basically just collects dust.) I really can’t think of any creative use for teeth that I would be excited about. We’ll probably just pitch them after awhile. No thank you to the necklace idea!
