Clearing my brain, and a bit about New Year’s resolutions or lack thereof

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

1) The first cup of coffee is so good that no other cup of coffee can beat it. Ever.

2) I am incredibly sore. I went to the gym yesterday, for the first time in three weeks. It hurts to raise my arms… but I can live with that for now. I don’t see myself needing to do raise my arms very often today. Ha ha.

3) I have two writing assignments and one web design-related project to work on today. But first, coffee and some verbiage to help clear my brain.

4) There has been a lot being written around the blogosphere about New Year’s resolutions. Should you make them? Skip them? How specific or general should they be? Why do we lose steam? Why bother etc etc. There’s already been all kinds of pontification and I don’t really want to add to the noise (yet here I am, ha!) but there was one post which made me stop and think, and that was Ginger’s (who, in turn borrowed from another blog). The idea is this: instead of making a resolution, choose one word to live by and adopt it as your own for the entire year. Ginger chose “grow.”

I like this idea. And I’ve been chewing on the idea for awhile and haven’t yet come up with a good, all encompassing word which will motivate me to reach a higher level of conscious living. But I will!

5) Here and there I’ve made little lists of things I want to accomplish in my lifetime. Over the years I’ve been able to strike them off one by one. I have had my photos published, I’ve had plenty of satisfying bylines, I have a little newspaper column (small but sweet!), I am my own boss, and work from home, and I have had many many opportunities to participate in some great projects. I have a degree, am married to the best guy, have two lovely children … but you know what’s missing from the list? (I feel silly even admitting this.) A book deal. Yes. A book deal. I feel like I’m jinxing something by writing about it, but I wanted to officially put it out there to The Universe. Because if you don’t ask The Universe you will never receive, right?

There was another story in the news the other day about a blogger and a book deal. (I can’t even remember the details, but how cool would it be to receive that email?) Those kinds of stories give me hope that it can happen to me, but then again I wonder if it’s too bold a wish for me to make. And I wonder whether I have enough material to write about anything. Or whether I have it in me to sit down and write ALL THOSE finely crafted WORDS.

What would you write about if you got your book deal? (Ha. I’m not looking for ideas. Just curious.) Or let me backtrack, because I’m probably not alone in this. Do you think a book deal is the goal for most bloggers out there?

No interest in a book deal here. Writing isn’t really my think anyway, I blog because I enjoy it and I enjoy reading other blogs. I never expected to make the connections (dare I say friendships…still such a touchy subject for me) that I have made.

I read Ginger’s post too and it has stuck with me.

Its not my goal but I do hear it mentioned here and there by other bloggers, and why not! It sounds fun. I often think of you when I think of doing things around Ottawa. Maybe start with a book about local treasures.

I read about the Word of the year on another blog and it has consumed me for the past week. I still haven’t thought of a good word for me. It will come to me though.

If I was lucky enough to grab a book deal, I would just write about my life. Not that it’s extrodinary or anything, it’s just me.

I’d love to have a book deal, too. I used to have my own website where I wrote stuff specifically as a place to develop my writing and work on articles to sell to magazines. Now I “just” blog, but I’d love to be able to make a living at it, either from having about 100,000 times the traffic I do now :), or by getting a book deal.

I’ve tried my hand at fiction, though, and it’s just not for me. I’d definitely have to write some non-fiction. I envision myself as the David Sedaris of stay-at-home moms. The world is waiting with baited breath, I can tell!

No wisdom with the book stuff (except to wish you the best with it!), but I wanted to say I agree with you on that first cup of coffee in the morning. Ahhhhhhhhh.

I had a children’s book in my head, and partially written down. My goal is to finish it and send it off. I have talked to someone about it, and they told me they are very interested. I’m not sure if that’s genuine or just “talk”, you know?

If I ever get that call you’ll hear about it! :)

Resolutions aren’t my thing. I have some small goals for the year that are very specific, like a to-do list. That way it seems more manageable for me.

Great post.
I think I am doing things backwards. I started my book before my blog/website. Still working on the book and ready to shop agents so wish me luck:)
You can do it! Go for it!

I never thought of a book deal through my blog. But, I did write a novel and have been working on a rewrite. I also have another story or two jotted down. So essentially, if I had all the time in the world to write, write, write I would love to sell a few novels. But, that would come after being a published photographer.
