Nature: so pretty and yet so creepy!

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Photography

I am tired of flower photos. Not just mine, but everyone’s. Even Scott Kelby’s special technique of shooting them from the bottom up no longer excites me the way it used to.

I’ve seen an awful lot of garden-variety florals. (Ha ha!) It’s challenging to do something different with something that’s been photographed a zillion times. Flowers are pretty, yes, very pretty, not always compelling, you know what I mean? I don’t take a lot of photos of flowers anymore. Not even when the tulips are out.

The other day I was outdoors, doing a bit of experimenting with the camera.

I was busy focusing on this:

Purple coneflower

… when this thing suddenly landed on my foot! Ew! I snapped this shot in the length of time it took me to swing the upper half of body in a downwards direction.

It’s my only frame. And yes, this is the top of my foot:

Big Fly guy

… and then it flew over here:

Big eye fly

… and then away from me and my camera altogether.

*shiver*

Later on I tinkered with them in Photoshop a little, in an effort to achieve something a little creepier:

Big Fly guy - with filter

Big eye fly - with filter

It was the Mother Fly!

I love it when interesting things reveal themselves in unsuspecting flowerbeds. :)

I keep meaning to not photograph any more flowers, but they keep calling to me!

Really nice macro work on that fly (ick!) though! Did you get a new macro lens? I covet one — I can never get close enough to things lately!

Very cool…I find when you are looking at flowers they are boring but if you have the most amazing light and the blurr things and look underneath you might find a cool spiderweb or a spider actaully eating its prey…So don’t stop for the flowers stop for what you don’t see.
and LOOK.

Sharon’s lecture over., ;)
(Like you needed one)

Dani: not all subject matter appeals to everyone! :)
BTW I wasn’t using a my macro, it was my 55-200 with a couple of close-up lenses screwed on. (Ever use those?)

Sharon: That’s what I’m thinking too. If it’s a floral shot it has to be “floral plus” to make it more interesting!

Creepy and cool.

I actually a bit tired of the macro thing with the shallow depth of field.

(Yeah.. I did do a wordless wednesday on it… but it was all about the title.)

Ooo, I was just looking at a set of close-up lenses on eBay. (Danger danger danger, do NOT start looking up camera equipment on eBay! At least not with your paypal account within reach!!!) Do you like them? They obviously take an excellent picture, and the set I was looking at was quite affordable — maybe $35 for a 2x, 3x and a 10x, I think.

And it’s those bug shots that I stay away from, I am not a bug girl.
