Work, mornings, and a list of what we did yesterday

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Easy ways to make kids happy|Misc. life

I was talking to someone recently who asked me how I manage to work and have kids running around the house at the same time.

Summers were really challenging when the kids were small. I wasn’t able to accomplish much work during the day so I’d stay up until godknows o’clock just to get work done. The girls are older now and are MUCH better at taking care of themselves, which is great because I can no longer stay up until midnight cranking out an article or a website design. I decided it wasn’t fair to me as well as client … who was probably getting the not-so-creative results of a person who is only a shell of herself after 10:00 p.m.

Although I am fortunate to be able to get some work done during the day I decided to taken the additional step of getting up early to get additional writing work done.

I got the idea from a creative writer’s workshop I took at Algonquin awhile back. The author leading the workshop wrote several books by getting up two hours early every day to write. (And at the time he was a full-time working dad of a young family to boot!)

It sounds crazy, but it works. If nighttime isn’t good writing time, why not go to bed early and get up in the morning instead? It’s not like I’m doing much after 9:30 p.m. anyway.

There’ve been a couple mornings this past week which have worked out really well for me. Yesterday, not so much. I got up and realized we didn’t have milk so I felt obligated to go out (pjs under my clothes) and pick some up.

Impromptu milk pickups aside, overall I’ve actually been enjoying having a quiet house to myself while I write.

ETA: The idea of making priorities and managing time are two things I’ve been thinking a lot about lately. If you were able to find two extra hours every day to do something you’re passionate about – what would you do?  And could you find those two hours if you tried? i.e. by giving up TV, decreasing the amount you spend on the Internet or adjusting your bedtime?

Just for fun I wanted to list all the things we did yesterday we:

  • watched some cartoons
  • biked to the library (it was closed due to a power outage)
  • returned our books anyway
  • biked home
  • biked through puddles
  • went to the bank to deposit allowances (It was so cute, and the girls feel very rich today)
  • brought our pennies to the coin machine at the Superstore (it was closed)
  • bought ingredients to make our own ice cream (we decided on “Creamsicle” flavour) and cheese buns for lunch
  • painted our nails funky colours
  • danced around in the rain (this was mostly the girls)
  • ran through puddles
  • fed the neighbor’s cat
  • ate grape-flavoured popsicles
  • played loud music while we tidied the house (we set a timer for 30 minutes to make it feel less like a chore)
  • took pictures in the garden (mostly me)
  • read
  • thought about how we’re going to spend the rest of our summer
  • collected moss for transplanting
  • napped (just me – it’s the early rising thing!)
  • made homemade mac & cheese for dinner, with carrots and broccoli on the side
  • biked to another place to feed another cat. (We’re professional house sitters this week – although it’s mostly just Mark. We’re just the assistants!)
  • read Harry Potter before bed (that would be Mark too.)

That sounds like a lot, doesn’t it?

Now what should we do today?

I hear you. Wanting to go to school year round is not going to be easy. Nathan needs to be occupied and is social and there is not many kids around for him to play with.

I find I work better at night and sleep in in the morning, during the school year it’s not a problem. I have my days to myself.

We will see how things go in the next 4 weeks. Maybe next year I can do it easier it is an adjust ment for all of us.

Cool! My year-long goal for 2009 is to write for two hours in the morning. This goal has a lot of moving parts (get up when my alarm goes off, go to bed early, cut down my to-do list so I’m not staying up late doing stuff, get comfortable with my writing so I’m not staying in bed to avoid it) so I’ve been working up to it in stages. It requires a LOT of focus to stay consistent, even though I have a lot of motivation too (my morning writing time was often my only time to myself in a household with two kids under three).

Anyway, hope your mornings continue to be productive!

Your description of working until the wee hours is me on most nights :) Since becoming a S/WAHM, I find prioritizing my time to be so challenging. I have thought about the waking early rather than staying up late idea but it just seems I get my best work done at night. I think I will give the morning thing a try one of these days and compare the two!

Funny that you wrote this today. I was thinking how much more I got done when J used to get up at 5am (or earlier) and wondering why I don’t still get up at that time to do stuff for me. I wonder if I would wake the kids if I got up earlier?

I think I asked you that too! I am constantly amazed (I wish I could say “inspired to more action,” but mostly just amazed) at all the fun little moments you squeeze in with your girls every day, while at the same time producing creative work.

Also, I took a workshop with the same author and I remember being awestruck by that kind of dedication — 2 extra hours in the morning! I recall he also used to also write by sitting in a parked car since there was no room for a separate office in the house with young children.

Both you and he baffle me! :)

It is a juggle, isn’t it? I’m lucky my kids are school age (which gives me some time to write during the day), because I don’t want to be doing this in the winter months.

Beachmama: I creeeeeak down the stairs every morning and no one has ever noticed. It’s bizarre how no one wakes up.

Julie: I squeeze it all in, sure, but neglect things like grocery shopping and laundry folding. :)

Alison: that is an excellent post. You made some good points in your comment too. Waking up early isn’t just about waking up early. It’s about going to bed early, and cutting out those other things that might keep you up late. p.s You have me beat by a mile with your 4:30 wakeup time!!

What a tremendous inspiration!

I have for about a month now basically started doing this, waking up two hours early and write, blog, read, research and it has done wonders for my morale is up.

I recently added a bike ride before this writing and my tire went flat three days in a row kinda telling me to stick to the writing

Thanks & Regards

I too creep down the stairs for a few cherished minutes of peace before the boys wake up whenever I can, but if I got up two hours before they did I’d be getting up between 3:30 and 4:00 in the morning!! I love the idea of the time to myself, but not THAT much!!
