Happy New Year, now out you go

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

Fragile, this side up

If you need me I’ll be in the basement, making four piles: keep and pack, keep to move, toss it out, and donate to charity.

Why on earth have I been holding on to so much crap?

Oh, how I love a good decluttering day! Best part of moving is getting rid of all that “why did I keep this?” stuff! Have fun!

As I already mentioned, I ran out of time for purging before packing and yet I did get rid of tons. Yesterday I struggled with more purging while reorganizing a cupboard. Crystal glasses with chips in the top – should be easy to get rid of – took effort to bin. Then two cracked teacups hurt my soul. And finally, four Tupperware glasses with lids that we never use. I threw out the lids. Killed me. Wish it were easier. As I said before, though, if you pay to store something or have to lug it from one side of the house to the other twelve times and THEN throw it out, it is really annoying. Do it now. Good luck!!

Isn’t that amazing, how one has this urge to remove clutter after the most clutter-inducing time of year…and you are lucky, you HAVE to pack it up and get it out. A move or renovation is the prefect excuse, isn’t it.

Getting the tree OUT was the first step for me, and I reduced my 6 bins of Xmas stuff to 3. HA! I’m so happy. The trick is, I find, to let go of every single item you have no emotional attachment to, and since I have many lovely old ornaments inherited from my deceased grandmother in Switzerland, I was finally able to get rid of all the newly acquired cute but ‘made in China’ ornaments that were just taking up real estate around here. I have no feelings whatsoever about those ornaments, so why not pass them on to someone who will enjoy them?

I am on a roll…

Happy New Year to you Andrea.

Andrea, I was in the basement doing exactly the same thing! I have no excuse for all the stuff, as we have moved over 20 times over 30 years; and we have already downsized. I do like Claudette’s comments, great idea to keep only the cherished decorations, remembering to store them properly and not just in cardboard boxes (insects love cardboard boxes, especially corrugated cardboard).

Good luck with your adventures.

It’s amazing what we all hang on to. We renovated our basement last year and it was so hard but cathartic to get rid of stuff…. Good luck!

I think the great thing about being a pack rat is that when I finally get around to binge cleaning, it makes a HUGE difference.

The de-cluttering goes nicely with the shopping embargo, doesn’t it? It’s amazing how much ‘ stuff’ we accumulate, that we kind of bought for no apparent reason!
