Looking for things to do in Ottawa? How about apple picking?

I cannot explain why we’ve never been apple picking before now. It just never worked out for us, but after we published a round-up of readers’ fave places to pick apples in Capital Parent Newspaper I KNEW that this had to be the year we finally did it.

And I am so glad we did. Just look what was waiting for us when we got there!

So many gorgeous apples!

It took about 5 minutes to pick 30lbs. Just so you know.

It’s a banner year for apples. The trees were positively sagging underneath all the fruit, and it didn’t take long to fill our bags.

But I’m getting ahead of myself. There are a bunch of great places to pick-your-own apples in Ottawa but we decided to go to Mountain Orchards. It was totally amazing. It made for a very sweet little family outing and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an outdoor activity that’s a little different.

Why Mountain Orchards? Well, they’re family-owned, and at a reasonable 45-minute drive it makes a nice short road trip from Westboro. It’s a low-tech kind of place too. There’s hay jumping and a tractor ride to the orchard and a corn maze… and that’s the way I like it.

Do not leave the premises without grabbing a jug of apple cider (they make it there!) and some apple donuts. They’re freshly fried right before your very eyes, tossed in a paper bag and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. Can’t you just smell them? OMGosh they were so good.

Dooooonuuuuts! Fresh and hot.

What about you? Have you gone apple picking yet? I’d love to hear about it! Or maybe you’re looking for an apple orchard around Ottawa? If so check out this page over at OttawaStart.

Mountain Orchard is our go-to place for apple picking. It’s a whole experience! We love it there and have gone for several years, and we’ll be going again next weekend :) yumm
