Day three of March Break

Posted by andrea tomkins in: - Ottawa for kids|Easy ways to make kids happy

We went to the library yesterday and borrowed a stack of books. And then our youngest baked a cake:

Someone has been doing some #MarchBreak baking today. (Hint: It's not me.)

It occurred to me that it might be fun to post a list of things that are fun to do with toddlers and kinder-aged kids over March Break. I think we often forget that kids of a certain age are easily amused, yet sometimes we find it hard to muster the energy to do something new. It doesn’t take much to keep them happy, does it? Things like:

  • Going through the car wash.
  • Baking cookies.
  • Making play doh.
  • Reading a new book together.
  • Skyping with grandma and grandpa! (Maybe they can read a bedtime story together?)
  • Bringing in a plastic tub full of snow from the outside and digging around in it with spoons.
  • Taking a bath, fully dressed. (Our kids thought this was the most hilarious thing EVER.)
  • Going to the pet store.
  • “Camping” in the living room (a.k.a dragging out the sleeping bags, eating marshmallows, and telling stories)

…. are all fun things to do with wee ones. What would you add to the list?

We have a biiiig project going on this week and I think it’s kind of cool. More about that later. :)

Going to an indoor swimming pool.
Going for a walk.
And of course, as you mentioned, spending time in the kitchen.

My 4 1/2 year old and 1 1/2 year old love baking and cooking with me. Of course, I give them age-appropriate activities to do in the kitchen. My eldest greets me every morning with: “Can we make recipes today?” I guess he sees me spending so much time in the kitchen every day that he thinks this is something that I want to do every day :).

My 3 year-old asks me if we can clean the bathrooms together. She loves to squirt water all over the tub while I do the actual cleaning in the rest of the room.

“Magic mud” is a big hit here too. Add water to cornstarch slowly until it reaches a nice consistency so that they can pick it up and let it ooze out of their hands. To 1/4 cup of cornstarch, add water a tablespoon at a time. If it gets too runny, add more cornstarch. From personal experience, I advise against food colouring, unless you enjoy living with a small person who looks like something out of a Robert Munsch book (Purple Green and Yellow?).
