Celebrating Local Food Week with Farm and Food Care Ontario

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Ottawa|Recipes and Food

Yesterday I had a full day traipsing around the countryside learning about Ontario food producers, although maybe traipsing is a bit of an exaggeration considering we were on a coach bus and we stopped at three places. ;)

The tour was organized by Farm and Food Care Ontario and was designed to (a) coincide with Local Food Week and (b) show off some of the great stuff that’s going on in the local food industry. Our stops included St-Albert Cheese Cooperative (some of you will remember the big fire that destroyed this critical cog in the cheese/cheese curd/poutine industry); Watson’s Mill, for a fantastic lunch of local produce catered by Take Another Bite; and Roots and Shoots Farm.

I thought I’d share a few photos from the day:

I totally bought this.

It was a very inspiring tour, and I was reminded of how important it is to shop as close to home as we can. There is so much great stuff happening in our region, and so many passionate people who are working very hard to put food on our collective tables. We are truly blessed, and I am DOUBLY excited to be part of a CSA this year!

I think I will continue to celebrate Local Food Week by trying some of that jarred cheese today…  :)

I picked this up in the St.Albert’s cheese shop. I’ve never seen it elsewhere! p.s. it’s super salty and delicious.
