Ottawa giveaway alert: Making healthy changes in the new year? Start here.

I’ve mentioned the book Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives, by Gretchen Rubin here on the blog before. It was a very insightful read. She’s done a lot of thinking about habit formation: why are we so good at adopting some habits over others? What can we do to break bad habits and keep good habits? How can we make it a little easier on ourselves to adopt good habits? (I know some of you are reading it now. Let me know what you think!)

If YOU are thinking about developing some healthy habits for 2017, I have something that will start you off on the right foot. I am very happy to be posting this giveaway from Fishbowl patron, terra20! It’s a great place to kickstart a healthy habit or two for the new year.

Some ideas to consider:

  • Swapping your conventional cosmetics and beauty products for brands that are free of harmful chemicals. Maybe 2017 is the year you add something new to your skin care routine? Cleansing cloths, for example, for the nights we just want to fall into bed. (I resolve NOT to go to sleep with full makeup!) Check out these Bamboo Facial Cleansing Cloths by Kaia Naturals, for example.
  • Greening up your clean routine at home. For starters, terra20 carries a whole line of cleaning products in their ecobar. As an added bonus, they come in refillable containers too, which means there’s less plastic is generated and used. Here’s something to think about. Even if you change one product it will make a difference over time. For example, we stopped using paper towels a few years ago and never looked back.
  • Ditching single use containers for daily beverages. Say goodbye to cases of bottled water and pick up a gorgeous refillable water bottle instead. (I love my S’well bottle from terra20!) Use an insulated mug of your choice instead of using up disposable coffee cups every morning at your favourite coffee shop.
  • Instead of coffee, how about tea? One of my favourite new habits is incorporating tea time into my afternoon in the form of a mini meditation. It gives me a few quiet moments to pause and reflect and it has helped me managed my stress levels. I’ve been exploring new teas to enjoy too. terra20 carries tealish brand teas that are made in Canada.

terra20 wants to help you make – and keep – your New Year’s resolution with a $50 gift card that you can put towards a purchase at any of their locations.

Would you like to win? Please read the following fine print before entering:

  • This giveaway is for one $50 gift card and will be awarded to one winner.
  • In order for your entry to qualify, have a look at the terra20 website. Using the comments below, tell me about your resolution and what product would help you meet your goal.
  • One entry per email address, please!
  • A BONUS second entry goes to folks who leave a comment on this Facebook post as well. Just make sure you come back and let me know in a second, separate, comment that you did so.
  • This giveaway is void where prohibited by law.
  • If you can’t post your comment for whatever reason you can email it to me for posting at andrea at quietfish dot com. Please note, I cannot be responsible if your entry is misdirected or gets stuck in my Spam folder.
  • This giveaway is void where prohibited by law.
  • I will draw one name using Random.org at noon EST on January 9, 2017. I’ll contact the winner via email, who can pick up the prize at one of the terra20 locations: Pinecrest, Wellington West, or Rideau Centre. The name of the winner will be posted here as well. So please check back!
  • Did you know that terra20 is on Twitter and Facebook? Following terra20 on social media is not a requirement of this giveaway but it’s a great way of keeping up with great deals and special events.

Over to you. Good luck, and Happy New Year!

My resolution is to make my lunch for work 90% of the time (As I sit here at work on the 31st with no lunch packed….)

I would get new lunch containers for the kids so I could reclaim my bento boxes.

Hi Andrea,

Thanks for the chance to win that gift card!

I have been on a long path to eliminate chemicals from our home and in our daily life for several years now, and am happily now cleaning our home with no chemicals (vinegar, baking soda, water and soap for the win!) and we have made great strides in eliminating all chemicals in our toiletries as well. The three things that we haven’t quite switched over yet are toothpaste, dish tabs, and dish soap so I would love the chance to try out these products http://www.terra20.com/toothpaste-1, http://www.terra20.com/dapple-auto-dishwash-pods-25ct, and http://www.terra20.com/nclean-dish-liq-mand-grpefruit.

my resolution for 2017 is to look younger with coffee bean eye cream! http://www.terra20.com/100-p-eye-crm-coffee-1oz ok, I don’t really have any resolutions because I am feeling pretty blah and the year ahead isn’t looking too bright. I wish I could work on a more optimistic outlook but right now…. I’m just not feeling it.

I recently watched some horrifying PETA videos and have resolved to only buy vegan products from now on. I would start with some ‘bunny free’ mascara for my teen daughter!!

The selection of beautiful and sustainable clothing at Terra20 is amazing. I cannot go in there without feeling deeply attached to something gorgeous. The Matt and Nat purses and wallets are also among my favourites. My eye is all over this and the name suits me just fine!

Happy New Year! I have been honouring my sleep better than ever since I’ve become a mom. Your challenge here inspired me to evaluate my Argan Oil. I use many natural products, and love essential oils. I would like to try Argan Oil as a conditioner, and I am interested in the charcoal deodorant. But when I do get back into terra, I would likely get a new lunch bag. I end up washing them frequently and I need to find a pretty one that is both large and washable. There are many many options at terra.

I don’t make resolutions (because they just get broken) but I’d like to take better care of my skin and the Grapefruit Facial Cleanser from Green Beaver would help.

To both combat food waste, and keep an eye on exposure to plastics this year we need to invest in some Eco friendly food storage containers!

I think we’re doing pretty well in this department, as I’m already a huge Terra20 fan. I replaced all my cosmetics, shampoo etc. years ago. My big problem now is PLASTIC. I am so sick of all the plastic we seem to go through, whether it’s those stupid produce bags, or the packaging for most snack foods. I’d love to grab some reusable produce bags for the grocery store, but I did a search and don’t see any (I will suggest they get some!) So some stainless steel containers would be awesome to replace some of our plastic lunch stuff :)

I would like to start using 100% green cleaning products. I have started using Terra 20’s tub and tile cleaner but still use commercial laundry soap and dishwashing soap – so would like to slowly begin replacing commercial products I use for natural ones during the year 2017.

I went natural because I started researching the products I used on my skin in College and how it triggered my eczema. From then on I went with organic products to tone down the impact of my eczema and it worked! I use Saaboon soap and Beeseline for my lips and skin. Now I’m starting to get into makeup again and Terra20 looks like the place to start doing that as well.

I have found that making resolutions doesn’t work for me. A long time ago We decided to start doing one good thing for ourselves per day and have stuck to it. We make litterless lunches, use refillable water bottles/coffee mugs, walk almost everywhere, make our own soaps etc. The products at terra20 are lovely and any of them would compliment the things we do already or inspire us to try something new!
