icy memories

Posted by andrea tomkins in: - Ottawa for kids|Photography

It’s a happy time that reminds me of days gone by.

We tool around in circles. My hands are cold and my feet ache. There’s a particular smell in the air – what is it – exhaust? ice? Sounds of laughter, blades carving the ice, a local radio station blaring over tinny speakers fills the cavernous room. The whistle blows; time to change direction.

We only skated on the lake. Skating on an indoor rink was a luxury. Perils of lake skating-you had to watch for holes from people ice fishing.

Love the photos of skating on the rink, I’m hoping to take my skates out this year to help teach my niece & nephew to skate as my sister wants them to learn but she is petrified of the ice & falling down. She asked if I would teach my niece & although I’m not the best skater myself, I will lace them up once again as yet another adventure is added to their childhood memories…

I’m old enough to remember Anne Murray being played on EIGHT-TRACK while I skated and stumbled around the rink in my home town… “There’s a house / on a hill…” “Hey, hey, hey, what about me? I’ve got some feelings on my mind too…”

God, that’s old.
