Kitchen bitchin’

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Home/reno

Gack. I entered a kitchen contest over at Chatelaine magazine. I am humbly asking you to go over there – look at the photo – and leave a comment telling Chatelaine (and Canada) how ugly my kitchen is. Feel free to go into detail. :)

I know it’s not the ugliest of the bunch (there are some doozies in there) but it definitely needs help. And it can be fixed up within the alloted budget. (I KNOW IT CAN!)

Of note:

  • The dog is to illustrate scale.
  • The floor. omg. Whose idea was it to install BROWN HONEYCOMB?

You do know how much I need this, right?

Extra good karma goes to those who “like” the entry. (Although I think LIKE is totally the wrong word here.)

THANK YOU.

What is the title of your entry? There are a lot to weed through – and yes, a lot of really ugly kitchens…

Not a fan of the brown flooring but otherwise… I kind of like your kitchen… Hope the judges agree with you and not me though ;)

Good luck. I first thought the floor had a retro look about it but then changed my mind on a second look. A white kitchen would look awesome!

I also think your kitchen looks fine. My wife entered ours – I would have preferred that her picture was of the exploded hole in the 60’s era oilcloth near the washing machine, from the time the exit pipe froze in the basement below and all the water ended up over our kitchen floor when the washer was on drain cycle.

As much as our kitchen is probably further on the “need” versus “want” side of things compared to most of the others I’ve seen there, I am still hesitant to do any major renovations because renos always create waste, and I want to make darn sure when I create renovation waste it was really needed. Using so-called “green” building materials does not make it all good when all of the old stuff is needlessly being tossed into the landfill site. Especially so when the renovation was not really required.

If anyone wants to vote for our kitchen here it is

In flipping through there seems to be an awful lot of people who cannot distinguish “want” from “need”. Nonetheless I do see a few who need a new kitchen even more than my wife and I do, so maybe you should vote for one of them.

bushidoka – I’m glad you think our kitchen looks fine, but trust me when I say that it no longer accommodates our family.

Are you saying we don’t deserve it? I’m not sure what you’re getting at exactly.

I should go back and read Chatelaine’s blurb about this contest but I don’t think it’s really about who is in the greatest financial or moral need, or whose kitchen is in The Worst Possible Shape. The judges will have their own ideas re: what they’re looking for. The rules don’t specifiy what their criteria actually is, but they’re probably looking for a kitchen that has potential, and could easily showcase significant changes/updates that fall within the alloted budget. I tossed my name into the hat because I thought it would be fun to try.

I am happy you entered. It sounds like your family needs it (there’s a hole in your kitchen?) but I think it’s a bit odd that you’re posting your link here. But maybe that’s just me.

Regardless… good luck !
