What’s your walk score?

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

As I write this I am drinking the first coffee I’ve had in about a week. I am enjoying it, although I suspect that in about 30 minutes I’ll be bouncing off the walls. When I’m sick with a cold, the taste of coffee turns me off.

I am feeling better today, which is good, because our long weekend is jam packed and there’s a lot to do today. My eyes still feel gritty and itchy. The girls and I walked down to the neighborhood pharmacy the other day to pick up some eye drops.

Once again, it made me remember why I love this neighborhood so much. I can take a pleasant walk and buy things like eye drops!

Speaking of which…

Walk Score will show you – more or less – how walkable your neighborhood is. The higher the score, the better the “walkability.”A walkable neighborhood = a healthy neighborhood and less dependence on cars. I wish the City of Ottawa had a better grasp of the big picture, and was better at encouraging the development of walkable neighborhoods.

How walkable is your ‘hood?

Interesting you should post this. I heard about this website on the radio last week and the name slipped my mind before I could get to it. Was your score about where you thought it would be? Ours seemed much lower than I thought at 53. I was suprised at the number of places we frequent that we not listed including our pharmacy and grocery store. They also left out a few a the fitness facilities that are very close by and do not note all the walking trails or how close we are to a major transit hub.

We scored low, 17. I was not totally surprised, I live in Emerald Meadows in Kanata. Not the most walkable neighbourhood, although I do walk a lot I just walk farther than most people to get to things. I did notice that it missed things that are in my neighbourhood, hopefully when it is updated we will score a bit better. I guess that is what I get for moving to suburbia! I am an urban mom living in the burbs, God help me!

We live in Westboro (a VERY walkable neighborhood) and we scored a 75. Somewhat lower than I thought. Hmm.

The program picked up a few things that didn’t make sense and missed a bunch of things too, like a whole lot of coffee shops… and bus stops. Isn’t proximity to public transportation worth a couple of points?

My house scored 43. But I’m suspicious. Wildlife Habitat Canada was listed as a bar (which may come as a surprise to them). Perhaps it was the “wildlife” that got it listed as such. Also Amy Brandon’s Guitar Lessons is apparently not really a place to study music but, you guessed it … a bar. And I suspect they are counting distance as the crow flies and not counting the fact that the Queensway is between me and some of these tantalizing locations.

We’re a 75 too. I guess that isn’t too surprising since we aren’t all that far away from you Andrea. I agree that it should be higher. Still interesting though!

not surprisingly, I got a zero…within walking distance all we get are cows grazing, corn growing, fields of sunflowers, etc…life in the countryside

Our neighbourhood in east end Toronto, on the Danforth, got a 62. That is definitely not high enough, because this is a very, very walkable neighbourhood and literally (not just real estate speak) steps from the subway, which someone else here observed should count. And yeah, some of the fine (and not so fine) establishments in this neighbour were misidentified. But great idea, and great awareness tool.

I love being able to walk to where I need to go! I live in a smaller town, not a city, but still. It’s good.

I believe that walk score is cool, but nowadays more and more people prefer to drive cars. Homes are often located in an area where some establishments are easier to get to by car than on foot. I’ve recently found a type of service on drivescore.fizber.com which is called Drive Score. It shows a map of what establishments are in your neighborhood and calculates a Drive Score based on the number of places within a convenient driving distance.
