Interpretations

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

“I know why some people are so big,” says Sarah. She’s motioning with her hands in such a way that clearly indicates she means “fat” instead of “big” … but since we don’t use the word “fat” around here it makes sense she’d substitute.

“Why is that,” I ask.

“Because they have a lot of love in them.”

I knew there was a good reason I was so *big*.

Give those girls of yours a random hug from one of us *big* girls. Get them to give you one too!

Obesity among children is an issue in the news lately and this child seems old enough to learn how to recognize a healthy lifestyle. There are other words to describe it that could be used.

Sorry “guest” … can you clarify?
And please do consider standing behind your comment with a real name (at least a first name) and a real email address.

This is an interesting and topical post for me, even if I am reading it a few weeks after it was written.
My older daughter (3) and I had left some peanuts on the driveway to help out the local posse of marauding squirrels in their quest to stockpile food for the winter.
We were watching out the front window when a big black squirrel came lumbering over and started helping himself.
I said to my little girl: “Wow, I think he may have already had some of our peanuts. He’s pretty fat!!”
My wife, who was within earshot, made a hissing noise and when I turned and looked, gave me a dirty look. “We don’t use that word,” she said.
At the time, I thought that this was silly, that it’s just a word.
But since then I’ve thought about how much I’ve struggled with trying to put on weight throughout my life and how hurtful it is for me to hear people use the word “skinny”. Even typing it out makes my skin crawl. I’m assuming that people who struggle at the other end of the weight spectrum have a similar relationship with the “f” word.
So anyway, from here forward, I will endeavor to strike the “rhymes with cat and starts with f” word from my lexicon.
