The assembly line approach to Valentine’s Day

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Easy ways to make kids happy|File under crafty

[I wrote this yesterday and forgot to post …]

I haven’t bought commercial kiddie V-day cards  in awhile. I refuse to do it. Their very existence sucks the creativity out of kids and does nothing but promote Assorted Superheros, Bratz, Barbie, SpongeBob or other characters tied to movie/tv/kiddie merchandise.

It’s tough to find non-commercial cards. And so, we make our own.

It’s easy enough if you have the supplies and begin early. We left it a little late this year. Sarah has made her 20. I put out pens and pencil crayons and v-day themed rubber stamps. She stamped a few, but mostly she drew a little individualized picture for each classmate. “He likes dinsours,” she’d say. Or “she likes princesses.” Some of her pictures were as simple as rainbows or trees, another one was of a landscape of a polar scene complete with igloo and a sled dog. I’m not sure what that has to do with V-day, but I’m okay with that.

Emma needs to make about the same number. She’s just getting started. I hope I have enough cardstock.  :)

Hooray for homemade Valentine’s Day cards! We make our own too, although I’m usually the one who makes Valentine’s for my son’s class. He is five and, sadly, has absolutely NO interest in crafts. In fact, I just finished up his. Come visit Little Woolgatherings and have a peek under the tag Valentine’s Day, located in the right sidebar.

I think making a picture to suit each child’s taste is so admirable and thoughtful. And what patience that must take!! Great job!

I love homemade Valentine’s. Everybody seems to buy them these days, but homemade means that a little effort was put into them. Good for you guys!
