random things

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

On the walk to school today we talked about what would make a good name for a doggie newspaper. We decided that “The Morning Sniff” was the best.

Piper cracks me up. She is such a funny little pooch. After we give her a bath or a paw wash she tears around the house like crazy. We call her The Furry Rocket. We also call her Pooper, for different reasons altogether (although she hasn’t had any accidents in the house for ages.) She’s been great – we’re all madly in love with her. Next on our list of things to do with the puppy: dog school. It’s inevitable.

I just finished reading Sarah’s borrowed copy of I, Coriander. She couldn’t put it down, and neither could I. If you have a girl who’s between 8 and 12 you will definitely want to pick this up.

New! Patrons! I will be writing them up in the weeks to come.

Mark and I finally watched Avatar. The special effects were amazing, sadly, I can’t say the same for the script… which was eerily similar to Disney’s version of Pocahontas. Also: UNOBTAINIUM? Could someone have come up with something a little more original??

I have photo gigs coming up. And am seriously considering upgrading my Nikon D70.

I’ve been working on a script for a local video production company about an explosives testing facility here in Ottawa. I submitted it for approval the other day and it’s full steam ahead. Woot! I love projects that stretch my mind and help me learn something new in the process. Here’s a TV segment about this place, which you should watch if only to “meet some people who blow things up every day for a living!” But seriously, did you even know we had something like this in Ottawa? I didn’t! I will tell you, having been there and talked to those people in person … it’s pretty darn cool.

I have another script-writing project coming up. It’s a promotional video for a summer camp. I can’t wait to sink into that one.

Today is a bigtime writing day. I will extract myself from my desk here and bring the laptop to the dining room table, away from email and Twitter. It’s the only way I can truly focus. And yes, I’m still working on the book project. More on that later.

What’s new with you?

I totally recommend the puppy training class at PetSmart (we went on Merivale) if you’ve never had a dog before. Really, the class is for the owners to learn commands etc. but the dogs get to socialize as well. We had a great teacher and other family members can watch from the side.

Our pug, Oscar, does the Pugtona 500 after he gets out of the bathtub. So funny to watch!

We were actually thinking of PetSmart. It’s been recommended to us by many people already.

Piper is smart, but only uses her smarts to her advantage.

When you tell her to sit she looks at you with a particular LOOK. An “I DON’T THINK SO” look. It isn’t until you have a cookie in your hand that she will decide to take a seat.

(Cookie was the first word she learned. And now we can have to spell c-o-o-k-i-e if we don’t want her to get what we’re saying.)

She also knows how to shake a paw. Seeing her wave her paw around (only when I have a cookie in my hand of course) is quite funny.

I watched FernGully with the girls the other night and it was jaw-droppinly similar to Avatar. Like, embarrassingly similar. And yessss! Unobtainium! I often get blank stares when I bring up how stupid that name is! Thank you!

yeah, they were great there! It’s mostly learning proper commands and hand signals. My dumb pug will still sit with only me snapping my fingers and showing the sit signal. You also learn not to contradict yourself “come on, let’s go” which confuses the animal. Has drifted over to how I talk to my toddler. Sit. Stay. Leave it. :)

Every few months or so, my son and I write a newspaper (distribution: 1) called The Doggie News. Neither of us gets a byline, all stories are written by the Doggie News Service.
