When journalists make mistakes

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Publishing/writing/career stuff

I have been sick with a cold for most of the week and I have been dragging my sorry butt around the house in the most pathetic way. At least one member of the family feels sorry for me. She has been at my side through THICK AND THIN*: * That is, when she’s not […]

I have a ton of stuff to share with you but I want to get one recent thing out of my head and onto the page before it flies out of my brain forever. The most recent issue of the Kitchissippi Times is a special International Women’s Day issue. It’d been in the works for […]

Some of you may or may not know this already, but I’m the editor of the local community newspaper in my area of Ottawa. It is not exactly a traditional 9-5 job. There is no typical day for me. I spend a lot of my time at my desk in my home office. Unfortunately, this […]

Last year I was part of a really cool initiative called Shop the Neighbourhood. The idea behind it is to encourage people to shop locally, which I love, because I truly believe that independent stores are the backbone of our community and help make it a great place to live. I’m very happy to announce that […]

One thing I never learned in J-school

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Publishing/writing/career stuff

I learned a lot about journalism when I was studying at Carleton. My four years there included a lot of communications theory but also a lot of very practical lessons in how to interview people and craft a story, but one of the most valuable things I learned about the interviewing and writing process didn’t happen […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark. We have two daughters: Emma (19) and Sarah (17). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
