Many of my Facebook friends are posting old headshots of themselves right now. It’s kind of a jokey thing but it’s actually been fun to see everyone’s photos. (Also, interestingly, there are more than a few people out there whose various social media profiles are sporting photos that are a decade old! Update your headshots […]

A new(ish) project

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Publishing/writing/career stuff

Some of my Facebook friends already know this, but I wanted to share the news here as well. For the past year and a bit I have been secretly toiling away on a special project. Longtime Fishbowl readers will be familiar with a family challenge I issued and undertook a handful of times starting back […]

I have a new post over at MediaSmarts.ca about how we dealt with the onslaught of princess-branded gear in our household when our girls were younger. What got me thinking about it was #hotdogprincess. (Did you catch that? What a hoot.) Always be yourself.?????? pic.twitter.com/NVCr6CMwmI — Holly Springs Dance (@marilynhssod) June 4, 2016 How you […]

Cover story

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Publishing/writing/career stuff

Awhile back I posted a little something about my day job, specifically as it pertains to cover photos for our community newspaper. I don’t want to rehash the whole idea again but I did want to talk a bit about another recent cover and how it came about because, truly, it made me very happy […]

I’ve been taking photos for a long time but over the past decade or so I’ve been doing it in a work capacity. Some of you Fishies will remember the few years I worked as a family portrait photographer. I came to a crossroads because I had to decide whether I wanted to write or […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human offspring: Emma (24) and Sarah (22). During the day I work as a writer at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
