One to grow on

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Easy ways to make kids happy|Home/reno|Recipes and Food

Everyone already knows that if you have little kids at home and you’re looking for an activity that might inspire healthy eating and a green thumb, the answer might lie in planting a garden. Green beans are a good thing to plant because they grow so fast. I planted some bean seeds on a whim, […]

I’ve written about my love/hate of backyard gardening before. For the most part, I don’t love gardening. I love it in May and June, when the garden centres open. I love to see progress, and things growing. I love harvesting things from the garden, whether it’s compost or the fruits of our labour. And I love […]

We are a little bit compost crazy here at Casa Fishbowl. We have a city-issued green bin, a backyard composter (it’s big and black with two hinged flaps on top) as well as two big “cages” for leaf compost in the back corner of our lot. We’ve been using the big green bin all winter […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human offspring: Emma (24) and Sarah (22). During the day I work as a writer at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
