We were at my in-laws on a hot day last week when we were alerted to the fact that there was a crow hopping around the front lawn. Correction, it was hobbling, in a rather ungraceful kind of way. So of course, being the bird nerds that we are, we had to investigate. Turns out […]

Final #Nestwatch update

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Misc. life|Ottawa

We came home last night into a dark house. It was late, and I was tired, but it occurred to me that I wanted to see if our baby robins were ok. I’ve never looked into the nest at night before. I was wary of shining a flashlight on the chicks at a vulnerable time […]

Three cheers for the weekend

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Misc. life

A few interesting observations that are worth noting: I watched one of the birds remove something from the nest this morning. It flew away and dropped […]

So this is what we did with our Christmas tree

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Misc. life

I am sad to report that we didn’t host a pop-up forest on our front lawn this year (although I was very tempted). After Christmas we tossed our tree out the front door to await tree recycling day. After a, er, couple weeks, I decided to stand it up in a snowbank, like this: Sidebar: […]

Birdfeeder revisited

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Oh! Things!

I know I’ve written about this before, but I had to say YET AGAIN how awesome this little bird feeder has been. Truly, it has been the gift that keeps on giving. (Click to enlarge the photo. It’s Mrs. Cardinal! She’s a regular.) I think this cold snap has been tough on the poor little […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (16) and Sarah (14). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times, and a regular contributor to MediaSmarts.ca. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
