A helpful tool for writers

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Publishing/writing/career stuff

Further to yesterday’s post about writing… The other day I downloaded an app called Healthier. I’ve had it running on my desktop computer at home, and I think it’s pretty cool so far. Basically, it runs quietly in the background and forces me to take a break and complete a desk-friendly exercise at regular intervals. […]

A letter from the editor

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa|Publishing/writing/career stuff

My family and I were walking past one of those bright Kitchissippi Times newspaper boxes in Westboro last night. I gave it a little tap. “Hey, it’s my paper!” I exclaimed. “Are you going to say that EVERY TIME mom?” sighed my youngest. Yes I am dear. YES I AM. Share the post “A letter […]

The art of blogging

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: The business of blogging

I think it’s really interesting that blogging means so many different things to so many different people. For some people it is a journal, a catharsis, a means of connecting with the world. For others it’s about coupon clipping and deal-getting. Saturday night rambles

Ah, Toronto. It’s been too long. I’m writing this in my hotel room, overlooking a jumble of condos stabbing the sky and slashes of train tracks lain on the ground. Yesterday I left the house with a suitcase full of clothing and a knot of frazzled nerves. My destination: Toronto. I drove away with nothing […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human offspring: Emma (23) and Sarah (21). During the day I work as a writer at The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
