A walk on the wild side

Posted by andrea tomkins in: - Ottawa for kids|Easy ways to make kids happy|Photography

A mini-hike along Sarsaparilla Trail on Sunday turned out to be all about local wildlife.

You know what I love? The girls have learned that if they’re quiet and keep their eyes peeled they might be able to spot something cool. It’s the ultimate Where’s Waldo!

These are some of the things we saw on our walk:

Red-breasted nuthatch

Blue Jay

Porcupine snoozing in an apple tree

Mr and Mrs. Mallard

Beaver tree

Fleeting chickadee

Black-capped chickadee

What beautiful photos! What the heck is that fuzzy thing in the tree? Your children are very brave to let the birds land on their hands. My kids need thick gloves and my husband hides when they swoop down. Another fun trail we will explore, thank you.

The Fleeting Chickadee photo is a truly stunning example of perspective and motion.

Laura: Thank you! And the fuzzy thing in the tree is a porcupine, all curled up in a ball and fast asleep.

We dispense with the gloves if it’s warm enough. The girls are used to the feeling of birdy feet. The tiny “talons” feel like someone is holding a hairbrush on your skin.

Webgeek: Thank you! That’s just one of many blurred wings. I’m going to have to invest in a faster lens (or visit on a brighter day) if I want really clear shots. :)

Re: porcupines in trees… They often fall out of trees when they are asleep and break bones… Some of the perils of being a porcupine (cause they cause lots of perils for others with their prickly prickles!).

I’m so late in catching up but these photos are amazing! When I used to go cross-country skiing with my dad at Mont-Tremblant Park (about two hours North of Montreal) there was a particular place on the trail where you could put crumbs/seeds/cheese in your hand and Gray Jays would land like it was nothing and eat right there.

I loved skiing there for a lot of reasons but the birds were near the top of the list!
