Reno post #12 – nouveau shed

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Home/reno

It’s been awhile since I posted a reno update. There’s not much new to share. We’re awaiting the next round of plans from our architect. Did I mention that we’re supposed to start The Actual Renovation in the Spring? No? Well now you know! I’m excited and petrified.

In order to avoid moving the contents of our entire garage into storage I’m thinking it might be a good idea to (a) perform a massive edit of the contents of our garage and (b) have a large shed built in the back corner of our lot (which I think is about 62′ x 115′). If we could find an 12′ x 8′ shed we could fit everything we needed in there before we vacate the premises. Also worth noting is that the new and improved version of our house won’t have a garage anymore, so we need something to replace it. And this would be it.

Mark and I took a peek at the selection at Canadian Tire and although I originally thought a resin shed would do the trick, I have spent some time thinking about it and decided that I didn’t truly love any of them. And why would I buy something I didn’t absolutely love?

This is on my backyard storage shed wish list:

  • it should be made of wood
  • it should have a door wide that’s enough so we can get the lawnmower in and out of there with ease
  • it should have room for our four bikes
  • I would like it to have a window (what do you think? Is it worth adding?)
  • it should be lockable
  • it should contain shelving for smaller items such as garden tools, and places to hang larger things like shovels and rakes, and be able to accommodate a couple giant RubberMaid bins of outdoor toys.
  • it should be lovely to look at.

I have a feeling that I’m going to have a tough time finding a design I like.

Why do all sheds have to look the same? I might have no choice but to go a custom route.

This is my fantasy shed (ha! I bet you never thought you’d find those two words together in a sentence).

Dammit. I wish I was a carpenter.

What do you think? Am I crazy for wanting a shed to be beautiful?

We had the same issue last year. Our yard is tiny and we have a playstructure, so we were very limited in what we could get. We did end up with a very small resin one, but only because we think we’ll build a custom one in a couple of years when the playstructure is removed. I don’t really like any of the HD or Lowes ones…

Hi Giulia ! Thanks for the tip! I actually looked at that site but there really isn’t much of a portfolio to look at. Too bad.

I think a nice garden shed could add a lot to an outdoor space. And it’s important to get it right!

Have you looked at Shed Ottawa (http://www.shedottawa.com)? A neighbour of ours had one built and delivered by them, and it looks very good: wood, quality details, etc. Of course, I have no idea how much it cost them. Some of the wooden sheds on Costco.ca are rather nice-looking too, although beyond my budget. Good luck!

Hey Andrea: We’re on shed #3, learning as we go. Here’s what I’ve learned: avoid anything that comes from a big box store; avoid companies that promise quick builds based on their plans; find a good contractor who will work with you to realize your dream shed. It may just be a shed, but it’s still part of your property, and in some cases may be more visible than parts of your house. That said, I still find myself flipping to the back of Dwell magazine to stare at the ads for custom-built sheds… especially those that serve as workspaces as well as storage.

I can’t blame you. Hubby and a crew built the shed at our old house and it was a thing of beauty! I used to joke that I would move out into it, rather than our house.

Check out the cedar sheds at Kaza Cabana in Kazabazua Quebec. They will deliver or build on site to your specifications. We are on are 2nd shed. Recently had one built in our back yard in McKellar Park and are more than happy with it.

G.B. Prefab (http://www.gardensheds.ca/) in Carp has really nice looking sheds. My parents bought a shed from them in the mid 90s and it still looked as good as new when they sold their home a couple of years ago.

Yes to windows! It just makes them look so much nicer and inviting. And helps to find things too if you don’t plan to run electricity out to it for a light.

Thanks for your tips and links everyone!
If I can draw one conclusion it’s that shed companies need good websites! Man …

Hi Andrea, we have been doing a lot of the same around here.. not the renovating but looking at sheds.

If I had a choice from above I would pick #2 it seems more like a cute cottage than a shed. We have decided that Hubby will build it himself and construction was going to start soon, then our washing machine broke so we may go another year before we get that shed.

My thoughts are don’t get anything you don’t love as you will have to look at it for a long time. Get a widow because it gives a second exit should something happen and you need it. And are you sure you can live without a garage, winters are cold ;)

Thank you thank you! I am desperately seeking a modern outdoor shed and you and the above commenters made my research all that much easier. So far, I think custom is thE way it’s gonna have to go.

Hi Andrea,
Last year we also went through that phase.
We order a shed from cabanon Fontaine : http://www.cabanons.com/

We have many options you can pick from, and wood as siding is one of them.
I also order a double door, very convenient, it worth the money.

Also with them, as probably with many other companies, you can order a kit which is partially built, just need to be put togehter (seems easy but it is still some work).

Have fun in your shed shopping.

Custom built is the way to go. Keep it simple but interesting. Board/Batten white cedar exterior and for sure put in some windows. Basic (plastic) windows (Home Depot) are cheap.
I’m building not one but two next spring (afer our reno).

Andrea – I have to start off by saying I love reading your blog! I live fairly nearby and while my kids are younger than yours, the issues you blog about are relevant to me and my family’s life.

I do have one comment that might seem out of left field as I likely don’t have all the background/details.

I would definately incourage you to go custom, once you find a good carpenter/handyman, you’ll be halfway there to realizing your dream shed. Our old house came with a wood shed that was custom, it wasn’t extravagent but the features are much better than the shed at our new house (same size) but it is pre-made in metal (doors are a pain to open/close), inside space is does not allow for cusomtization, i.e., shelves, hooks, etc.

On another note, we are almost in the reverse situation as you as I DREAM of having a garage and our new house has space where the shed currently sits (apparently there was a garage there in the past).

A frustrating question for you after all the work that has gone into the design process for your reno BUT here goes … do you really HAVE to give up your garage in the reno?

You can only fit so much into a shed and have the items easily accessible to you.

On another note, we used a POD to store our items during our move – it sat in our driveway for several weeks and we called it our “walk in closet”. We found the POD really useful for storing and accessing our times during this time.

I wonder if there are any limits to the size of a shed? I know over a certain size you need a permit …

[…] Many of you know that we’re planning a reno (you can read past posts about that here). The plans are almost final but in the meantime, we’re tightening our belts because guess what, haha!, we’re spending more than we planned! (And I want a really nice stove! And a new bed! And a really cool shed!) […]

I know it’s scary but I think you should design and build your own from recycled materials. Even if you have to get a carpenter to do the actual work, it might be cost effective?? I love this built from pallets http://www.readersheds.co.uk/share.cfm?SHARESHED=1488

or these .. not too far from you perhaps??? http://www.readersheds.co.uk/share.cfm?SHARESHED=2391
