The ultimate s’more!

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Recipes and Food

I’m going to come right out and say this: I don’t really like s’mores. I feel like I’m confessing some deep dark secret here, but it’s true!

I do like a hot roasted marshmallow, that is a fact, but I feel like it loses something once it’s sandwiched between dry crumbly graham cookies and a square of cold hard chocolate. Whenever I eat one I feel like I’ve just wasted 600 calories on something that wasn’t really worth it.

As the chief menu planner I made an executive decision not to make s’mores for our recent camping trip for exactly this reason. But THEN my mother-in-law gifted us with batch of homemade brownies upon our departure (yay!) and as I unwrapped them after our first night’s camping dinner I had a sudden inspiration.

THIS:

THE ULTIMATE S'MORE

Andrea’s S’more-like Alternative

  • Take one homemade brownie.
  • Top with a roasted marshmallow.
  • … and eat it while it’s hot.

It is the perfect marriage of chocolate and marshmallow! Why haven’t I thought of this before? It’s rich and chewy, and you will feel like you’ve died and gone to heaven. You must try it!

p.s. interested in another s’more alternative? Here’s one I really like too.

I totally agree. I am not a smores fan at all. Brownies, those I like and that does looks delish.

i always make smore when camping although i am not a huge fan of them. i feel the pressure- you HAVE to make them!

my son learned to make “banana boats” (with marshmallow, chocolate chips) at cub camp & those are fun!

last summer, my bro-in-law in B.C. made the BEST smores EVER. i think the key was that he REALLY SQUISHED them so everything really mixed together. first time i ever had a 2nd one!! it was changed my smores outlook :) also, good quality chocolate helps!

on another note, did you see the SMUFFIN- a smores muffin?? a woman on the U.S. Dragon’s Den (show name??) came up with a smore muffin. interesting.

I’ll definitely have to try this! I wonder if you can heat up the brownie a bit as well?

My favourite cheater’s s’mores: toasted marshmallow + chocolate-covered digestive cookie.

I don’t like regular smores either. However, we found that making them with ginger snaps and dark chili Lindt chocolate makes for a great version. Or in the summer we made them with grilled peaches which you can see here on my Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/fishlynews/7803677838/in/photostream

Have you ever tried Caramilk instead! Put the rounded side up, rest the marshmallow on top, then allow the heat of the cooked schmellow to melt the thin layer of chocolate.

Mmm. I could go for one of these right now! We always put smooth peanut butter on the Graham crackers. Definitely increases the deliciousness factor and helps stick things together.
