I wish I knew the whole story.
Edited to add: I talked to one of the resident nuns this morning. It was as I suspected. The order is dying out. There are only about 25 nuns remaining, and they’re moving to the other (newer) side of the building that currently exists as a women’s dorm. The old building has electrical and plumbing problems and it would cost too much to renovate. They’re sad, but they’re selling.
My guess: the developer wants to cram as many living units in that space as is allowable by law. It’s up to the community to rally together and come up with a solution that suits everybody. I’m no architect, but I would love the building to be preserved in some shape or form.
It’s a part of this neighborhood. And I think we shouldn’t be so quick to let it go.
