The beginning of the end?

Maison Jeanne D'arc - the signage is up

Gah. I hope it isn’t. Click the photo for enlarged flickr version if you’re keen to see the details.

[this refers back to this post]

I wish I knew the whole story.

Edited to add: I talked to one of the resident nuns this morning. It was as I suspected. The order is dying out. There are only about 25 nuns remaining, and they’re moving to the other (newer) side of the building that currently exists as a women’s dorm. The old building has electrical and plumbing problems and it would cost too much to renovate. They’re sad, but they’re selling.

My guess: the developer wants to cram as many living units in that space as is allowable by law. It’s up to the community to rally together and come up with a solution that suits everybody. I’m no architect, but I would love the building to be preserved in some shape or form.

It’s a part of this neighborhood. And I think we shouldn’t be so quick to let it go.

I just read your blog entry. I am so saddened to hear that they can no longer justify keeping that beautiful building going. There were so many old nuns when I went to school there I’d imagine that the order is just dying off and they can’t justify the buildings.

Anyway, if you plan to take some pics of the site I would be so grateful to have copies. I don’t know if I can get there in the next week (although I’m sure things won’t happen that fast) But if you see
bulldozers coming let me know :) I have so many happy memories of that school it breaks my heart to know I won’t be able to drive by anymore
and revisit them. :(

You can know! Go to the meeting! Call the developer! That’s what we’re doing. You can be heard on what you’d like to see happen with the inevitable new building, and you can always file objections with the OMB if it’s really awful! That’s what we’re doing – it can be done!

precisely. Let’s get the developer to set up a meeting and flyer the community, so we can find out what’s going on.
