Last night I attended the media launch of the 2018 edition of Doors Open Ottawa. We’ve participated in Doors Open for a few years and I’m so pleased that this amazing event has gained more and more traction every year. As Mayor Jim Watson put it in his opening remarks, Doors Open represents a unique opportunity […]

The reason I first started this blog turned 19 yesterday. (!) Last night the eldest and I browsed a few past birthday–related posts here on the blog. I tell ya, celebrating 19 years is pretty different. Here’s how it went down. 1) I was up at my usual hour. When she finally woke up I begged […]

Bike goals 2018

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa

I’ve declared – at least to my image in the mirror this morning – that this is going to be the summer of cycling. Of all the “active” things to do in Ottawa, this is in my top three, right after walking to the pub and hiking in the woods. ;) Have you seen the […]

Feeling trim, date night, and a new gig

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa

Well, friends, we are just past the halfway point with the Whole 30 thing and I have good news and bad news. Bad news: I cheated. You are technically not supposed to weigh or measure yourself at any point during the thirty days, but I did. I blame Mark! He weighed himself and announced a […]

I was bummed to miss the media preview of the newly renovated Canada Science and Technology Museum back in the fall and have been dying to pay a visit ever since to see what I’ve been missing. Happily, the opportunity to go presented itself earlier this week because the eldest was home for reading week […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark. We have two daughters: Emma (19) and Sarah (17). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
