Mark’s birthday was in September and we commemorated the occasion with a great bike ride… to Aylmer, QC. Some of you might remember a bike ride we undertook last summer. Frankly, I amazed myself. We biked to Stittsville and back to Westboro and LIVED. But this was not that. The bike route to Aylmer from […]

Bike goals 2018

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa

I’ve declared – at least to my image in the mirror this morning – that this is going to be the summer of cycling. Of all the “active” things to do in Ottawa, this is in my top three, right after walking to the pub and hiking in the woods. ;) Have you seen the […]

You may or may not recall that I spent a bit of time and effort earlier this year preparing for a 5K race. I diligently followed a training plan that had me running intervals that increased in duration each week, both on the treadmill and on an outdoor route. (Frankly, I am still amazed that […]

An epic bike ride and an important life lesson

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa

If you follow me on Twitter you already know that Mark and I undertook a big bike ride earlier this week. For those who don’t: we biked from Westboro to Stittsville and back and I LIVED TO TELL THE TALE. As far as distance goes, Mark tracked it on his handy Strava app and it clocked […]

Andrea’s Tuesdays: a bike ride and a half

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa

To review: every other Tuesday is my day off and I’m trying to use this time to recharge my batteries. No work, no meetings, minimal errands. Last time I went to the gym, then Ikea, and later celebrated someone’s milestone birthday. I wrote most of this post at my local branch of the Ottawa Public […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark. We have two daughters: Emma (19) and Sarah (17). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
