hate mail

By andrea tomkins in Misc. life

To the individual who has spent so much time and energy writing long emails telling me:

– that I’m a liar
– that I’m stupid
– that I’m ruining my children (in several different ways)
– that I should be ashamed of myself
– that I’m an ungrateful brute
– that I’m a bad person

I’m not reading any more of your emails.

I am very sad for you. And sad for me. I hope you find some support somewhere, because you clearly need some help.

World of Webkinz

By andrea tomkins in Yaktivism

We have a handful of Webkinz in our family. A couple more happened to find their way into my children’s hearts at Christmas time. In terms of cuteness, they’re okay. We have other plush that I think outranks Webkinz in the cute department. I remember when I first saw Webkinz and the stringy texture of their fur. I thought they were odd, because it made them more tickly than cuddly.

For those of you who aren’t in the know, Webkinz are small plush animals. They probably appeal more to girls (kittens, puppies, bunny rabbits, and unicorns), but there are some “unisex” ones that would probably have equal appeal more to little boys too, like frogs and gorillas and turtles and the like. Each character comes with an original ID number, which kids (with help of parents) use to unlock a virtual version of their toy on the Webkinz website, called Webkinz World. Webkinz World has its own economy.

Here’s how it works:

Down and up, in that order

By andrea tomkins in Misc. life

My email/internet/connection to the greater world has been down all day. I was on the phone to Mark about it several times.

He told me to unplug the router and plug it back in. I did that. THREE TIMES. And I started and restarted the computers. NOTHING WORKED.

Earlier this evening Mark asked me which cables I had unplugged. I pointed to a blinking box on the desk. The two over there.

No, he said. You should have unplugged this one and THAT one, he said, pointing to a wholly different blinking box.

*sigh*
