Notes from a Dim Sum convert

This is a peek at my lunch yesterday. A group of us from the office went for Dim Sum at Yangtze:

Fitting eh? Since today is the Chinese New Year. :)

Funny thing: I cannot for the life of me remember if I’ve been here before. I MUST have been, years ago, but my brain is a fog and I can’t say for sure. That being said, I have officially decided that I need to make Dim Sum a regular part of my life. What’s not to love about ladies wheeling carts of food around a restaurant and serving it to you, right at your table? This covers all of my favourite things about eating out: it’s delicious, delightful, and communal. Everything that was served up yesterday was amazing. My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Here’s the question: how will my kids feel about coming here? They like dumplings and spring rolls, but will they be adventurous or will this just freak them out? Are you a Dim Sum family in Ottawa? Any tips to share? If so, where do you go?

From Wikipedia: Dim Sum is a style of Cantonese or Hokkien food prepared as small bite-sized or individual portions of food traditionally served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. Dim sum is also well known for the unique way it is served in some restaurants, whereby fully cooked and ready-to-serve dim sum dishes are carted around the restaurant for customers to choose their orders while seated at their tables. [Basically, it’s awesome.]

I love Dim Sum but learned the hard way it isn’t restricted diet friendly. Sigh. Someday….

I actually had lunch there today and thought about whether it would be worth bringing the kids or not. They would not each the shrimp and squid, but would probably enjoy the pork and beef dishes. It was a great lunch for celebrating the Chinese New year.

LOVE dim sum. Perfect family meal. Everyone gets to eat what they like. Your daughters will love it. Oh and dim sum is reasonably priced. Best place in town is…top secret. ; )

Anything that allows me to just eat continuously is pure awesome…I’ve had dim sum myself, but have never taken the kids

Dim Sum is our go to family lunch outing…has been since before the kids. It was perfect when the kids were little because we could be in and out quickly, you don’t have to worry about your toddler being noisy and there are many easy dishes to start with (BBQ pork buns, noodles, pork or shrimp har gao (sp?) Don’t assume your kids won’t eat it…you never know unless you let them try. The awesome thing about Yangtze, as most dim sum restaurants, they have lots of big tables and if you look around, you will see lots of multi-generational families eating together.Two things to note: it can be busy on weekends at Yangtze and if the carts aren’t working in your favour, you can always order from your server a couple of dishes to keep you going until the right cart comes along.
