A little bit about Hintonburg

Posted by andrea in: Misc. life|Photography

I realized I should probably expand on the photo contest entry from the other day.

Hintonburg is an interesting part of Ottawa. There’s a great range of sights: good, bad and ugly. But just because someone’s ugly doesn’t mean they’re not a nice person. No siree. Hintonburg has character. And lots of it.

Mark and I used to live in Hintonburg, on St. Francis street, right behind St. Francis church on Wellington St. It was a great place as far as apartments go. Ours was the top floor of a three-story building. The room was long and rectangular, and got lots of sun. The best feature was probably the back deck. It was nearly the size of the apartment itself. You accessed it by stepping on the radiator and crawling out the kitchen window.

We tried to grow peas out there. But it got scorching hot in the summertime.

Raccoons would come and visit at night.

When we got our birds we’d let them out of their cage and they’d fly the length of the room, eventually perching on the windowsill.

On Saturdays I’d head out to wander around the neighborhood. It became a bit of a ritual for me. There was so much to see. Some interesting junk/antique shops sprang up on along Wellington. That was always my first destination.

The photos below are ones that I took on my most recent wander. We don’t live there anymore, but for some reason I feel the same kind of affection for Hintonburg.

p.s. The first two pics are the ones I entered for the photo contest. :)
