this is my brain on blog

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

– Earth Hour is on Saturday.  (CBC info about it here.) I had somehow forgotten. Did you know about it? I think we’re going to power down like we did last year. I find it a LITTLE ironic we can all watch Earth Hour specials on CBC Newsworld, don’t you?

– This is day two of my embracing part-time veganism. Basically, I am pretending to be a vegan for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. Dinner is whatever I want it to be. It could even be Bacon fest! I read about the idea in Food Matters. (An interesting read but a little too light.) In any case the 12-hour vegan concept forces me to eat more fruit and cut out butter. (I am allowing milk for my coffee. I wouldn’t be a very happy person without it.) My mother is rolling her eyeballs right now I JUST KNOW IT.

– I’m taking a creative writing course on Saturday!

– I’m guest blogging for Canadian Family Magazine next week. Eeep!

– Local artist Katerina Mertikas (mother of Fishbowl reader Loukia!) has an art show coming up at Koyman Galleries. There’s an opening reception coming up at the St.Laurent location on Friday April 3 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.

– I’m planning Sarah’s birthday party. I think it’s going to be a sleepover for scientists. Long story.

– Emma has decided to train for a children’s marathon through her school. We are going out together in the mornings. Gah. I hate running. Today I just walked REALLY FAST with my latte.

– You know what phrase has been turning around in my head: “ask and ye shall receive.” Sounds rather biblical doesn’t it, but it is very very true. If you don’t ask (or stick your neck out every once in awhile) nothing will ever come to you. Sometimes “the ask” is a risk. You can ask:

  • for feedback on a project
  • for someone to help you in some way
  • for a favour
  • for an opportunity
  • for a raise
  • whatever!

I made a couple of “asks” yesterday. Who knows what will come of them. One can only hope, right?

I’m wondering, what’s the last thing you asked for? And what can you ask for today? And will you? What are you waiting for?

I asked for you to mention my mom’s art show on your blog, and you did, so I wanted to say a big thank you to you! :) And I hope you can come by that night!

It IS ironic that you can watch Earth Hour specials on CBC!

Good luck with your guest blogging! :)

And I want to hear about your creative writing course – where are you taking it? I’d love to take a creative writing course.

And more info, please, on the scientist sleepover party! Sounds fun!

Loukia: I will email you!

And it seems this post has prompted at least a couple of you to make an ask. Yay you!

(You know who you are!)

Congrats! Sometimes it takes so much courage to do the ask with amazing results. But why is it that I can’t even think of something to ask for right now? I know there’s stuff I want to happen…will have to think more…

Thanks for making me wonder, I’m sure I’ll come up with something!

I totally agree about the asking thing, but I personally find it hard to do. I’m going to start with something little and immediate: where’s that creative writing course?

Sounds like a great weekend, I hope you enjoyed your creative writing course!! I’m looking forward to seeing your guest blog post next week too.

Uh, let’s see. I asked my husband for a caesar last night while we had the power out and he brought me one. I asked if we could play Scrabble so we drank caesars and played boardgames!!

Congrats on the Canadian Family guest blogging! Looking forward to reading!
Since starting my own business, I have had to do ALOT of asking. It is something I have had to get used to because it is not something I particularly liked to do even though I KNOW that you are right, that you won’t receive anything if you don’t ask! It has gotten easier which is great, I am not so hesitant anymore. The absolute worst that can happen is that the askee will say no!

The last thing I went out of my comfort zone to ask for was twittering about needing a job.
I was very, pleasantly, surprised about the number of helpful answers I got!
I even got a part time job out of it.

Congratulations on the guest blogging gig!!
