Root vegetables are plentiful this time of year.
The other day we found ourselves with a few too many carrots on hand, so I grated ’em up and made this slaw out of them.
Forgive the imprecise measurements:
a few carrots
a spoonful (or two) of rice vinegar
a spoonful (or two) of sugar
a handful of peanuts (pound them a few times with a hammer to crush them)
some sliced green onion
Grate carrots. Mix vinegar and sugar. Pour over carrots. Mix. Sprinkle with peanuts and green onion. Serve.
Last week our little Sarah turned six and a half. Here she is, with a cake adorned with 6.5 candles. No gifts were exchanged, but Emma and I each made her a half card (mine was cut on the horizontal) and after dinner we all sang half of the birthday song.

Did I mention Sarah lost her first tooth right around when school started? I’m not sure if I posted this photo here, but in case I haven’t, here it is (I adore this picture – it’s so Sarah):

Yesterday I spent the entire day with Sarah’s class at the Science & Tech museum. It’s not one of my favourite places to go (is it just me or is it really dark in there?), but I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to learn about Shapes and Structures and hear a 90-minute lesson about Materials.
Best part of the day: watching kids make a rope out of toilet paper and hoisting up one of their classmates on it. The TP was the one ply industrial kind too! See another application for TP-rope here, one that was actually suggested to our group of eager students. ;)
Most challenging part of the day: making sure no one got lost in the “Nortel connexions” tunnels.
A few kids emerged a little bedraggled. Fortunately, no one was left behind. :)

There are so many great things to do here in Ottawa for families – for young kids and old ones too. :) Family fun (not to mention FREE family fun!) is part of why I love Ottawa so much.
