a peek inside the fishbowl

We have a winner! Thanks for your entries!

I’ve written about the OSSD before. This Fishbowl patron is a great member of our community here in Ottawa. I’ve seen firsthand the wonderful programs they offer and I know a lot of you have too. There is so much going on at the OSSD. There are so many great opportunities to learn and have fun here. Check out their fall youth schedule for example! The programs for kids age 3-10 are great too. And did you know that OSSD also has classes designed for students with Asperger’s syndrome, and/or those on the Autism Spectrum with related special needs? Programming is created and implemented with specific consideration for the needs and abilities of the clients, with a focus on the individual and their creativity. (If you know someone who’d benefit from this info I encourage you to forward this post to them!)

Here’s a class I think sounds really cool. I wonder if I could convince my tweens to try this one out?

MUSICAL THEATRE (11 – 13 years)

A “Triple Threat” actor can dance, sing and act all at the same time! Get your feet wet and jump right into learning some songs. OSSD’s Musical Theatre program helps to develop all of these skills. Students learn how to tell a story through words, movement and song. Training focuses on acting, singing, dancing and working chorally as a group. Specific musicals, or musical theatre themes, are selected based on the needs of the students. Students work toward final workshop presentations.

Cool eh? This giveaway entitles the winner to a $250 gift certificate to put towards a single course for children or youth at OSSD. Please note, this prize has no cash value and does not include applicable taxes or registration fee.

This prize is perfect for parents who have been thinking of enrolling their kids but haven’t taken the plunge yet. Interested? Read on!

Here are the details:

  • In order for your entry to qualify, check out the Fall courses on the OSSD website. Using the comments below, please tell us which course you’d choose if you won the giveaway and why.
  • Only one entry per family please.

  • If you can’t post your comment for whatever reason you can email it to me for posting at andrea at quietfish dot com. Please note, I cannot be responsible if your entry is misdirected or gets stuck in my Spam folder!

That’s it! Entries must be in by noon on September 12 2012, at which point I’ll do a random draw of all qualifying entries. The winner will be contacted by email, so make sure you leave a valid address.

That’s it! Over to you. Thank you OSSD for this great opportunity!

Edited to add: Make sure you read the warning at the bottom of the post!

I bet you never thought it was possible to make your own balloons, did you? Well, I’m here to tell you that you CERTAINLY CAN.

We picked this up at FAO Schwartz in NYC this summer:

Magic Plastic

You see, I was sucked in by a demo. A young lady stood on the side of a busy aisle, like an unassailable rock in an overflowing current of crazed children, silently, calmly, peacefully, tossing a balloon of her creation up in the air, over and over again. It was so Zen.

I couldn’t help myself. I was lured in faster than you could say: WHATISTHATTHINGYOUAREHOLDING. I walked over, we got to chatting, and I left with a small package in my hot little hand.

It’s covered in warnings which obviously means it’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s flammable. It’s not to be swallowed (“Not a gum”) or inhaled, and needs to be used in well-ventilated areas. It’s also to be kept away from varnished, plastic, and polished surfaces. (Er, let’s just call this an OUTDOOR TOY ok?)

First, you squeeze out a small amount of this sticky red goop and make a ball about the size of a marble. Then you press the pipe down into the centre of it and pinch it firmly around the edges.

Then you blow. And then you try again, and again, because there’s a trick to it. (Hint: it’s kinda like blowing bubbles, but you need a lot more air to start you off.)

It will come out a little odd-shaped, but that’s half the fun if you ask me.

At this point it will stop being so sticky. You remove the pipe and pinch the hole closed with your fingers:

And there it is, your very own balloon!

I’ve never seen it locally (please let me know if you have) but I do know that Magic Plastic is available on Amazon.ca* if you’re really keen.

Is that cool or what?

** Sooooo, a helpful reader pointed out that this product is probably banned in Canada. Here’s a link to more info. For what it’s worth I definitely would not recommend kids under 10 play with these kind of DIY balloon kits. And even kids over 10 should be supervised by a responsible adult.
