Saturday on the Canal

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Easy ways to make kids happy|Photography|Recipes and Food

… or the “Skateway” as I’ve heard it called.

Navigating the Rideau Canal with kids can either be very very fun, or very very awful. We had a bit of both on Saturday.

We started at Patterson Creek in the Glebe and skated towards Dow’s Lake. We got as far as Landsdowne Park before we turned back.

You have to pace yourself, otherwise you might live to regret it.

Partway back we stopped for a wee break. I snapped a few pictures and was interrupted by some serious wailing. Emma had lobbed a snowball chunk of ice and Sarah’s face got in the way “by accident.”

We still had quite a ways to go. Sarah cried all the way back to the car. I hate it when our outings end like that.

These photos were taken before the meltdown, mostly during our maple taffy eating break. You’ve never seen stickier stuff. But it’s worth it. Warm liquid taffy is poured over lightly packed snow, and it hardens as it freezes. The hardened syrup is twirled around a popsicle stick and eaten like a lollypop.

I'm amazed she didn't get sticker than she did

we were there too!

Except we started at Dows Lake and the wind, that strong wind, made it mighty cold. Was fun on the way towards the canal cause the wind was on our back and pushing us and we knew that a beavertail was awaiting us. But coming back, yikes, taht’s when the complaining started: “i’m cold” “Im tired”

Next time I want to start at Patterson Creek, bet its more sheltered from the wind there.

Ahhh, skating on the canal. Now that’s something I miss about living in Ottawa. I also miss Beavertails, and the fact that the people who live in Ottawa enjoy the outdoors all year long. Now the cold, hmmm can’t say I miss the hairs inside my nostrils freezing kinda cold!

Oh It looks like fun. I should get Nathan and I into skating lesson. I can skate but not well. I need some instruction.

Did you go to the Opening at the snowbowl with Randy Bachman? I did. Love It . Danced and sang my lungs out!

Hugs
