a peek inside the fishbowl

hourlyphoto

I had a lot of fun doing my one-photo-every-hour-for-a-day project. My enjoyment must have been contagious because Lex picked up the idea and did it as well. There was some Twittering about it afterwards and a bunch of us agreed that we wanted to do it again on a date in the near future.

And SO IT SHALL BE.

The date: Friday October 2, 2009
The deal: Take one photo every hour starting from when you wake up, and ending whenever you (a) go to bed or (b) run out of light. :) I took one when I woke up and one every hour until 10:00 p.m.

Use whatever camera or mobile device you prefer. Post them to your blog and/or your photosharing site as you go. Just make sure you let us know where you’re posting them so we can all have a look. Tag them “hourlyphoto” so they’re easy to find. Twitter along with the #hourlyphoto too.

Would you like to make it extra challenging for yourself? DON’T DO RETAKES. (!) This is not mandatory but I thought I’d throw it out there in case you’re the kind of person who likes a challenge.

Here’s a tip: I set my mobile phone’s alarm clock for every hour, one minute before the hour i.e. at 6:59, 7:59, 8:59 etc. That gave me a minute to get my camera ready (I used my iPhone) and snap The Thing I Happened To Be Looking At.

Please consider playing along. It’s really interesting to see what other people are seeing at the same time you are. (Um, that is, provided we’re in the same time zone, if not, that’s okay too.)

ETA: it’s not a problem if you aren’t able to upload as you go. Just upload in batches when you have the chance. And you don’t need a Twitter account to play along either!)

Who’s in? I’ll keep the list of participants and their websites updated here.

Margaret

Margaret

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Margaret, a professor at Queen’s.

The task: to take a traditional kind of headshot she could use for the web, handouts, and for other professor-related materials.

I had a great time hanging out and snapping away. I got a little carried away during our shoot and called her a cutie pie. I think she thought that was pretty funny.

She was friendly and chatty and made everything so easy. I couldn’t have asked for a better subject.

The power of The Ask

By andrea tomkins in Misc. life

Thank you all very much for your kind comments regarding yesterday’s post. I am feeling totally charged and ready to rock. Woot!

Ann commented about something I meant to add to the original post, and that’s about Putting Yourself Out There and Asking the Universe. I’ve written about this before. I know it sounds hokey but I totally believe it.

I think the idea of The Ask is a two-fold kind of thing:

You have a goal. Something you want to achieve. Step (1) Ask the Universe (or your god or whatever). You have to ask out loud. It’s not good enough to whisper it into your pillow at night or keep it buried deep inside your heart of hearts. If you ask the universe it will deliver, but it won’t be via FedEx. You have to take some action too, but the first step is to put it into words.

I also believe this is all mixed up with karma. Good things will happen to good people.

Step 2) Ask someone for something you need in order to help achieve your goal. If you ask someone for help you won’t be in it alone. Need guidance? Support? Babysitting? Someone to drag you off the couch? Ask. If you don’t, you’ll just go on wondering/suffering/living without achieving the thing you truly desire.

What’s the worst thing that can happen?

I know this is a big question for a Wednesday morning, but I’d love to know what you’re dreaming about and what kind of goals you want to achieve. I think it’s something we need to take time to think about. It’s too easy for our dreams and goals to get lost in the minutia of everyday life.

So here’s my question for you: What are you asking for? And how are you get it?

  • Is it a new job? If so, can you narrow it down and start asking people if they can keep an eye out for interesting opportunities?
  • Is it a mompreneur kind of thing? You want to sell knitted baby hats at craft shows but don’t know where to begin?
  • Has it always been your dream to be a sommelier/photographer/pastry chef? If so, what steps can you take to get there?

Anyway. This is all rambling about in my head and it’s come out all higglety-pigglety. I have to get back to work! So over to you.
