a peek inside the fishbowl

Ok.

Posted by andrea in: Easy ways to make kids happy|Misc. life|Photography

Now that summer is drawing to a close I am running out of things to do I am less motivated than ever before.

To alleviate afternoon boredom (and give me a chance to finish the book I’m reading) we drew our own railroad tracks on the driveway. It winds this way and that, and, for additional educational value, I wrote the alphabet and numbers 1 – 10 up the sides of the track as well as the words STOP and GO. Note the large fish pond in the middle.

So.

Let’s see how long this keeps them busy. I’m timing it. It’s already been about 20 minutes. [Edited to add: my best estimate is that the fun lasted about 40 minutes]

You probably already had this figured out but, when I do tracks on the driveway, I tape (heavy hockey type tape) the chalk to an old broom handle. It is much faster than doing the whole thing on your knees.

The kids like it too and I will often let them use the ‘stick’ to make their own patterns. Then we add things: the library, the grocery store, the gummy worm store (sorry!), etc.

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human offspring: Emma (24) and Sarah (22). During the day I work as a writer at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
