Liveblogging the first day of summer, the 2014 edition
Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life
A few years ago I started liveblogging the first day of summer holidays, and every year I return to it because I think it’s a fun exercise that provides some insights (for me, anyway) into our own family history. (Here’s the first one, from 2008!) For me, the ability to look back is has always been one of the benefits of blogging. So here goes! I’ll be updating this page during the day with most recent updates being added at the bottom.
8:17 a.m.
I’ve been up for over an hour. It’s going to be a very hot day. I’ve already done my daily dose on the treadmill and made myself a coffee. Breakfast is pending, and it will include this granola recipe and some fresh strawberries we picked yesterday. Mark biked to work. Emma has also left for work (YES. REALLY.) and Sarah has plans with a friend today. I have some writing that I need to finish up and a crushing to-do list.
I’m trying to remember how the saying goes, is it no rest for the wicked, or no rest for the weary?
9:13 a.m.
No point drying my hair as the humidity is just going to take over anyway.
And if you don’t know about these things yet, it’s time you found out:
Shower timers! They are ALL THAT. Good for water conservation and sanity conservation for busy families. pic.twitter.com/XKFoMUp3lT

10:00 a.m.
The AC has been off since 7:00 a.m. and won’t be turned back on again until tonight. My plan of just sitting still underneath the ceiling fan has a few holes in it. Unfortunately I need to do a grocery shop and run some errands. Ack. Where’s the sunscreen?
10:07 a.m.
So much for keeping the house cool. The youngest has decided to bake a cake.
11:33 a.m
Hoo boy. I’m at the grocery store buying sugar for the aforementioned cake and there are a dozen people ahead of me in line. At least it’s air conditioned in here. Sigh.
12:07 p.m.
Running errands, starving, and lunch seems very far away. Cue tummy growling.
1:43 p.m.
Arrived home to find a messy kitchen and spillage in the fridge. Gaaaaah! I’m still starving.
2:06 p.m.
FINALLY.
2:45 p.m.
Went for a walk with the dog, now I’m thinking that I need a big iced coffee to get my day back on track. Westboro Village, here I come!
3:15 p.m.
Decided to make pickles before heading out for coffee. Ha ha.

4:00 p.m.
Back from Bridgehead, feeling refreshed. Work calls!
5:50 p.m.
Sarah has been with friends all day and Mark and Emma are both home from work. Our thoughts are slowly turning to dinner. It almost feels too hot to eat. Thank goodness for the BBQ. And pickles!
7:12 p.m.
Dinner was a good one: BBQ drumsticks and a big salad. Off to Westboro for a gelato!
8:02 p.m.
And then there was this:
Guess where we went? Hint: it was summery and delicious. pic.twitter.com/xdfrN6qTdJ

8:10 p.m.
There’s a movie being cued up: Dead Poet’s Society. I’ve been waiting for YEARS for someone to finally be old enough to watch this with me. Oh captain, my captain!
Unrelated: Looks like the youngest might be having a sleepover tonight. Thankfully we will be storing the young girls in the basement for the evening.
10:55 p.m.
What a great film eh? The kids are sleeping – or well on their way – and I’m calling it a night!
